Soul Calibur IV will be supporting real time online gameplay on both Xbox360 and PS3-versions. This is not the first time a fighting game supports online gameplay - both Tekken and Mortal Kombat (2004) are examples of that.
The developers were hesitant about introducing online fighting multi player functionality because just a small slow-down might be 'lethal' to the online gamer during a contest. Lag is something that just isn't tolerated in this genre. With Soul Calibur IV the developers felt that the hardware of the 360 and PS3 was finally good enough to give online multiplayer gameplay a go. Soul Calibur IV gamers will need a fast broadband internet connection to be able to play and online functionality will probably be limited to a single platform multiplayer mode.
The game will feature the old well known characters as well as some platform specific characters like the last part. On the GameCube - Link from Zelda could be seen, Spawn appeared on the Xbox version and Heihachi from Tekken felt at home on the PS2 version. Which characters will be appearing on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 is yet to be announced by Namco Bandai.
Don't hold your breath - the game won't be out until somewhere in 2008. Until then people can fight online with the remake of Tekken 5 on both the PSP and PS3.

Fight Lag
Well, the only thing that can be said about lag is that while there are a lot of factors that influence how bad it is or whether you have it all, there have been plenty of fighting games to this point, both 2D and 3D, that have worked just fine online. The Virtua Fighter series has still thus far resisted, but I'm sure when six hits it will have it too.

Lag
Yes, the second I saw this post the first thing I thought about was lag. Though, that could also be seen as adding to the realism--after all, in a real fight, I'm sure it's common to "freeze up" every now and then or even blackout. Too bad they can't find a way to work this into the code, so the lags actually become part of the gameplay. ;-)
