John Carmack - one of the Id software founders - has shown interest into the possibility to create a special Quake-Arena version for the Nintendo DS. He was inspired by playing Metroid Prime Hunters - which is quite a good fps on the Nintendo DS btw! - read more.
Carmack made this statement on the special, QuakeCon conference organized by Id Software. QuakeCon is actually quite a nice example of the very popular CamelCase typesetting by the way. John said that he already immersed himself and got himself acquainted with the techniques necessary for the popular hand-held console. In fact he went as far as to spend the bigger part of his last holiday with a special Nintendo-DS developers-kit and he was very impressed with the multi-player functionality on Metroid Prime Hunters. This inspired him to come up with the idea to develop a multi player Quake version for the Nintendo DS. This new Quake-version is planned to be comprised of a Quake-Arena-theme and deathmatch-Doom 2 like game-play. Graphics-wise the game will be '2 1/2 D', according to John. I am not sure what he means by this - perhaps using the same type of flat sprites as the enemies that we became familiar with in the Doom 1 and 2 series?

More Quake
Well, considering Doom- and Quake-like games have appeared on consoles as far back as the 32X, Jaguar, 3DO and N64, it's no surprise that the DS can handle it, particularly when Carmack himself is going to be involved in some capacity and it's going to modified a bit from full 3D. I don't like the DS setup for FPS games, however, as I just don't feel like either using my thumb or the stylus is particularly comfortable/intuitive...
