Video Game Collector Magazine

These guys are a small outfit that I've seen on newsstands at Barnes and Noble, which seems like a haven for niche magazines. They just released a new issue: http://www.vgcollector.com/index.htm

I see these guys as basically accomplishing what I'd like to see us do at some point, and that's go legit to print, even if it's a quarterly thing. I'm still very much behind the online thing and all of our other plans, but I just KNOW there's a market out there that needs to be tapped.

For the hell of it, I'm going to inquire about writing for them. I want to see how they operate...

No response back. Oh well.

No response back. Oh well. That in and of itself speaks volumes...

How True

Very true, Bill. A few months ago I sent inquiries to two different online zines dedicated to adventure gaming. As you know, Mat and I have been studying them intensely for a year now, and I've been done my fair share of writing (some of which I am very proud of!) There I was, offering my services as a professional writer and scholar FOR FREE, and yet neither one bothered to so much as acknowledge my existence.

I tell you, I just don't know how these people stay afloat. We were so desperate to attract new talent to AA--we would have gladly taken more people onboard and gave plenty of mediocre (or, frankly pisspoor) contributors respect and attention. I just don't get it.

Yep, treasure those you can

Yep, treasure those you can count on and pretty much expect to have to do most things yourself and make what you want to happen happen based on your own actions. We've gained a lot of valuable insight and some interesting relationships over the past few years...

No Kidding

And that's why I think Neo is going to be something really special. We're more experienced.

Indeed

In fact, I might suggest one tactic--we'll gladly accept external submissions, but let's not beg for them. We'll put a "Submission Guidelines" page somewhere in the site (perhaps as part of a general FAQ), but it will be in the layers and definitely not prominent. I want people to realize it's a privilege to write for AA, and that our standards are so high that we'd rather do the work ourselves than take on crappily written schlock.

Remember the whole powerglove scandal...Geez.

So.....1. If you want

So.....
1. If you want things done prepare to do them yourself.
2. If you make a promise (want to contribute) i.o.w. to do something for AA, keep that promise or else have some pretty damn wonderfull excuse if you don't.

;)

A New Attitude with AA

Yeah, that's pretty much our new attitude, I think. Whether it's other AA team members or outside contributors, no one is going to "beg" anyone else to do anything. If someone doesn't get something done, it doesn't get done, too bad, as things will move on without them. The rest of us will pick up the slack just fine and take due credit. It's nice to have the help, but no reason to expend the effort to get it or make it fit our standards.
