New Info for 2K Sports' Don King Presents: Prizefighter

2K Sports has just sent me new screenshots and a video for their upcoming Don King Presents: Prizefighter. Anyone who knows me knows that I love boxing games, owning and playing a wide range of classic and modern titles, with my most recent favorite being the seminal Fight Night Round 3 for the Xbox 360. While it looks like EA is going to go for a more arcade-style boxing game on their next go-round, eschewing the "Fight Night" branding, their arch enemy in sports videogames, 2K Sports, looks as though they wish to claim the realistic action boxing game title with "Prizefighter".

Corporate challenges aside, boxing has classically been one of the toughest sports to properly capture, so the 2K Sports team will have their work cut out for them on a first effort. Nevertheless, I'm in their corner--at least at this conceptual stage. Video trailer and photos:

Good news!

It looks like Fight Night: Round 4 is on!: http://www.grrlgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11269&highlight=

So even if Prizefighter stinks, we should still have a worthy entry after Round 3...

Wii, Eye Toy and other stuff

You as a gamer performing the real jabs and punches in mid-air whilst your avatar on screen is doing them on screen against a virtual opponent.

It has to be implemented better than it has been thus far on the Wii, however. Wii Sports Boxing is a joke, really nothing more than a "button masher" in Wii-mote form. It remains to be seen if programmed correctly and perhaps with a slower pace (which actually would be critical for many reasons), if the Wii-mote in its current form can in fact simulate a proper boxing match. Certainly dual analog stick control schemes, a la Fight Night, can be fatiguing, but you at least have roughly the fine control you need for the types of punches you want to throw.

I actually have about four virtual boxing games (hardware-based), not even counting playing Mike Tyson PunchOut! on the NES with either the Power Glove or the UForce. They're all based on approximations rather than 1:1 movement, which is what is really needed. That may not be possible until Wii 2... At the same time, I kind of like how virtual boxing and karate was implemented on the Eye Toy's mini games, as that was actually 1:1 collision detection. However, those were certainly too simplistic in their own ways and limited by requiring the player to remain on-camera in a particular position.

Boxing Games - A Favorite of Mine

I only played a little of 4D Boxing, though it was highly acclaimed. Very rough 3D visuals.

I had a pirate copy of Frank Bruno Boxing for the C-64. Very nice visuals, much like Punch Out!, but also very glitchy.

I can't even count all the boxing games I have for countless platforms, console, computer and handheld. Most are action games, some have RPG elements and some are strategy games. Some take a realistic approach, some have licensed boxers and federations, and some take a very cartoonish approach. It might be fun to do a super feature one day on all those games. I'm sure I have dozens of different ones (no exaggeration). It's obviously been a very popular genre, but only occasionally done extremely well.
