Hardcore Computing/Computist Magazines Available for Free!

Bill Loguidice's picture

Softkey Publishing's magazines', Hardcore Computing, Hardcore Computist, and Computist, are available for free from The Computist Project Website, either as PDF's or by request via free DVD. In addition, the PDF's have recently been re-cropped, color corrected, and OCR'd so they can be fully searched. Definitely check out this valuable community service to Apple II-series enthusiasts and software hackers in general. As a nice bonus, this project has even been blessed by the original publishing company! Check out the Website here. I know my free DVD is already on its way (thanks, Mike)!

Good find! Stuff like that is invaluably cool. I know that magazines of the day sometimes made a point of being able to modify the "source code" of software released in BASIC format, like much of the early Avalon Hill computer software. In other words, while there was often a downside in terms of speed and relative feature-set/complexity with commercial BASIC software, it had the added advantage of often being easily editable (Even I in my youth, remember editing the mediocre strategy football game on the C-64 from Avalon Hill to work with the SAM, software-based speech synthesizer (though the program would often crash due to memory limitations!)). Obviously the magazines in question took this one step further with editing programs that weren't really meant to be edited, like Akalabeth. Very, very cool, particularly since we don't have the icky issue of relative copyright concerns with this stuff today.
