Fukio "MTJ" Mitsuji, the game and character designer of Taito's Bubble Bobble, passed away last year on December 11th.
He was suffering from kidney failure and suffered a heart attack upon which he slipped into a coma before he died.
Bubble Bobble has been ported to just about any platform out there ranging from home computers to game consoles. Mr Matsuji was responsible for quite a few other titles as well:
Land Sea Air Squad
Rainbow Islands - the story of Bubble Bobble

The four latest Bubble Bobble games on Wii and 360
I never liked Rainbow Islands or whatever it was, and never really got into puzzle bobble. Only the original game really hooked me. What an original concept!
Not to be confused with "Bubble Ghost," a game I never cared for. Though I did love Wizball.
I actually liked Bubble Ghost (if we're talking about the Accolade game), though it's certainly not the greatest game I ever played.
Just now, I was enjoying Bubble Bobble Neo on the Xbox 360. The redid the graphics and sound but kept the original gameplay intact. It's the first time in ages that I thought the new graphics and sound are an improvement on the classic era graphics and sound. Usually it's made gaudy or ugly, but this is absolutely perfect. Interestingly, there's another Bubble Bobble game on both the Wii (WiiWare) and 360, and something similar to Bubble Bobble Neo on the Wii (again, WiiWare) without the improved audio-visuals. You should check out the WiiWare titles, Matt.

Bubble Bobble is one of my favorite arcade games for sure. It's one of the only games I ever played actively with my sister while we were growing up. We played it many, many nights on the Amiga 1000 - but never beat it. I did finally beat it with MAME, though, since you could just keep "inserting credits" and weren't limited like you were in the Amiga version. We tried so hard! If we lost a man before level 13 we'd start it over, for instance.

Pity. I just added Super Bubble Bobble and Bubble Bobble 2 to the custom folder of my arcade machine. That's the folder I put MAME games that are configured the way that I want.
I have quite a few of the conversions of Bubble Bobble and his other titles on several of my older systems. He was a pretty darn good designer.
