Well, file this one under possibly too-good-to-be-true, but I apparently just bought on eBay a used - but seemingly in great shape - Midway TouchMaster 4000 Countertop Touch Screen Arcade Machine for about $200 shipped (it has no bill acceptor - this is set to free play). While I was reserving the space on one of my end tables for a real skill stop slot machine, for what is ultimately less than that would have cost shipped, I have this: http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?db=videodb&id=5735&page=thumbs . Stunning. The seller has 100% feedback (it's an arcade supplier) and I conducted the purchase through eBay and Paypal, so I'm 100% protected as well just in case. Hopefully this is not only a win-win, but a win-win-win. Between this and the joy I'm getting out of my new (refurb, arrived yesterday) white iPhone Touch 16GB - which itself is almost a total pleasure after much tweaking (with some still left) - I've been on a personal technology roll. I'll try to blog about the machine after it comes. I'll also leave open the possibility that my wife will be upset with me, as I didn't get a chance to get her approval on this before pulling the trigger, but the plus side is we could easily sell this for much more than we paid if she insisted (we have to get new garage doors, family dental work, etc., so I'd certainly understand).

Here's a great flyer scan that shows the games: http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=5736

Well, the two month ordeal
Well, the two month ordeal with this, detailed here: http://www.armchairarcade.com/neo/node/2500 , looks like it's finally coming to a positive conclusion. The seller got a refund check from the shipper and has been holding a Midway TouchMaster 5000 for me, which is a lot like the 4000 I originally ordered, just with newer software. Fingers crossed this one survives the shipping process!

tools
Damn straight! I'm tired of denying myself desperately needed tools or programs just because I can't afford it. :)
I'm really sweating now because I want to buy a $600 HD camera to record my Matt Chats with. I keep trying to justify it, but truth be told, it'd just put us deeper into debt. Not sure Matt Chat is worth that kind of investment, since it obviously doesn't generate any revenue.
No worries.
Bill, your case is a special case, in that videogames are not just a hobby. Now that you are a published author and budding movie-maker on the subject, it is a CAREER. I know that your wife is taking this into account!!!! Especially since she is writing a videogame-oriented book herself! You have found a unique niche and have become successful at it.
Now if your family is really suffering because of your hobby, then no one would feel sympathy, but you strike me as someone too responsible for that to be the case. If you spent $200,000 on your purchase, then I could see problems, but you spent pocket change for a cool piece of videogame history!

Got the pass
I know my arcade machine got the ol' stinkeye (especially during concept and funding phases), but once Ms. Pac-Man (with speedup hack) and Q-Bert were played, I was forgiven.
Of course, now I have to boot her off, so I can play...but you can't have everything!
Congrats, Bill! Hope you have fun with it!!
Thanks! Actually, she's cool with it, so all is well. I just felt bad spending the money considering we need to replace our front entryway and garage doors, among other things that popped up recently. It still hasn't come, but I expect it some time this week I would imagine if it shipped on Monday...
My wife too enjoys Ms. Pac-Man and a few other games every now and then on our arcade machine, so I agree there!

...you're golden.

MegaTouch

There are several variations from several manufacturers. Probably the most popular is the "MegaTouch" series. This particular one from Midway is from 1998 and pretty much contains the same type of stuff all the other ones do. The latest ones use LCD's instead of Tube monitors these days for a sleeker profile.

Looks cool! And a steal for the price!
Is this the same "Touchscreen" type coin-op that is seen in just about every pub and local restaurant, and in many arcades? Or is it an "ancient" variant?

ha ha, yeah, but luckily my wife is actually cool with it. Now I just need to keep my fingers crossed that it comes as it says it's supposed to: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&i...
