Matt Chat 30: Fallout

Matt Barton's picture

This week's Matt Chat looks at one of my favorite CRPGs of all time, Interplay's Fallout from 1997.

BTW, I picked up that Fallout Trilogy at Target yesterday for only $20. I'd prefer that to a download if it were just me, but to each his own. At least the GOG deal will save you a trip to the store. I was disappointed that it didn't come with a manual (just the PDFs on the disc), so you're basically paying for a somewhat nice box and DVD.

You might want to read my review of Fallout 3 as well.

Let me tell ya, I had a hard time getting the footage for this one. I at last stumbled upon a solution for the in-game footage--the new version of FRAPS lets you drop below 25 FPS, which was necessary to get a smooth recording (I dropped it to 20 and was able to get decent footage). The cut scene with the old man talking was a BEAST. For some reason, it just wouldn't record (the audio would record, but not the video). I finally ran an SVIDEO cable from my graphics card into my TV Capture card and used WinTV to capture it. It worked (better than I thought), but the audio was out of sync for whatever reason. So, I had to adjust that the best I could.

Nice work!

While I was watching I was wondering how you had captured the video so nicely, thanks for sharing the info on the tools you used.

Excellent video as usual, commentary is arguably your best.

Great video as usual. I purchased Fallout (I & II) a while back, but never got around to playing them yet. Watching your video, of course, makes me want to give it a go.

If anything, you seem to be having more fun than ever doing these videos. And the "Ritalin" joke had me laughing out loud. Your enthusiasm for this game is infectious.

As for me, CRPG's are generally the hardest types of games for me to get into, because they require tremendous dedication and focus, plus they usually don't start out with a "bang," leaving me somewhat bored and aimless at the beginning. Fallout, with its rather non-linear approach and massive variations in play style, left me a bit overwhelmed. I decided to shelve it until I am in the mood for a deep game.

Well, now I want to play it, thanks to your video. I'm going to be groggy at work tomorrow from playing this game all night, thanks to you. Excuse me while I pop some Ritalin.

I must have done something

I must have done something right this time! 47 comments and counting! That's *amazing*. Seems like folks have finally gotten over their shyness or whatever it was and are now commenting like crazy. It's like candy recess for me.

Great Review!

Another fantastic review Matt, please keep them coming!

Just wondering, have you played The Fall: Last Days of Gaia? It's as close to the Fallout series as you will ever get IMHO, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzGgqiaDzKA&fmt=18

Interesting. Looks a bit like the KOTOR engine, but with graphics reminiscent of Fallout 3. Is it available in English?

Yes, it's German but there's

Yes, it's German but there's an unofficial fan made English translation mod. Not sure if the official English version was released, last time I played this game was a couple of years ago.

*Fallout 3* just didn't live

*Fallout 3* just didn't live up to the hype for me. It just fell short in terms of immersion, storyline, and game play.
