GP2XMaxconsole has written a review about the Linux based console that Shane R. Monroe has been ranting about in his Retrogaming Radio shows. And rightfully so, it is a flexible open source device that has excellent retrogaming qualities and tons of emulators and games for it. As we speak MAME, C64 (also +4,vic20,c128), Genesis, Nes, Tg16, Snes are very playable, close to full speed and getting better all the time.
I myself own a first edition, 'beta like' version of the machine and it suffers some design and assembly errors. The joystick is my major pet-peeve, horizontals and verticals are harder to hit than diagonals, screwing up a game of pacman. But I could rectify that for the most part with help of a modified joystick cap. I still have mixed feelings about the device, but perhaps I should give the 2nd edition a try.
Yes, a new 'proper' 2nd version of the machine is being released and can be bought as we speak. It is supposed to be a higher quality build with a reworked joystick that handles better. EvilDragon of www.gp2x.de has taken one apart and has posted some pictures of the insides, did I see gold plated headphone sockets? Hey, I am sticking to my own First edition for now.

275Mhz is overclocking.....
275Mhz is overclocking the unit. Some do it without modification, mine runs stable upto 250Mhz. You don't want to run that speeds on regular alkalines. You're best of using good recharables 2300mAh or higher!
At 200Mhz (standard) Genesis/Megadrive emulation is running perfectly on 2 cores on the Picodrive emulator
At 200Mhz (standard) Snes emulation is pretty much getting full speed on a lot of games with the new ASM CPU core
An exciting machine the gp2x!

It seems like they addressed
It seems like they addressed several of my concerns with this version of the console. Once full speed emulators start to hit, it may very well be worth a purchase. Luckily, I'm in no rush, but as a "rogue" system it gets more interesting all the time.

GP2X Developer's Kit
I just noticed that the Official GP2X SDK has been released. Looks like the perfect niche market for amateur game dev!
