Unboxing Video for the OnLive Console

Bill Loguidice's picture

I did a quick unboxing video for the new OnLive Console. I'll do a full review after Christmas, but if you have any questions in the mean-time, let me know (by the way, the USB cable is for the initial syncing of the controller to the console, it doesn't actually allow you to charge it).

UPDATE: The controller is actually slightly larger than the Xbox 360 controller and it comes with both a regular battery compartment and two AA batteries, as well as a rechargeable battery pack. So a nice package is even a bit nicer.

Don't forget, my videos are available at a wide range of locations, with a wide range of subscription options, and in a wide range of formats, including YouTube, iTunes, RSS, and many more via blip.tv!

Awesome! Can hardly wait to hear your opinion on OnLive. I am interested in this and Gaikai (basically the same thing but involving big names like Dave Perry). Right now, I am on a 1 meg a second connection, not nearly good enough to enjoy something like this (I am moving and will be offline for awhile but will be back with either a 12 meg a second connection or a 75 meg a second one, either is leagues better than my current setup).

Looks great Bill. I'm interested to see how well it handle latency issues and also what the rendering quality is like. Are they using a proprietary codec or are they streaming a flavor of mpeg4?

You should give it a try. Right now it's free and of course works on just about any Windows PC from as far back as the XP era. The key is the quality of your connection. I did not have satisfactory performance over my wireless-N connection, but I expect when I try it over a wired connection (and even the forthcoming powerline networking solution) it will be pretty much smooth sailing.

I may.. one of my main concerns with the service is bandwidth usage if I start heavily using it. I currently have the Comcast bean counters going over my records with a fine tooth comb. :)

That is a concern as streaming becomes even more popular

It's apparently no more abusive than Netflix, but I haven't tracked it. I too wonder someday about my Internet usage being flagged by Comcast, between OnLive, Netflix, Xbox Live, PSN, regular Internet usage, LogMeIn, etc., etc., but based on what THEY claim any type of throttling or warning is only for people downloading GBs a day non-stop as with large torrents. We'll see I guess...

I don't see World of Warcraft

I don't see World of Warcraft on their list. That seems like a no-brainer for this.

Im re if Bliz would let um they would. But a few of the game rumour sites (RUMOURS only, no facts) say Bliz says they wont release WoW on any console device, but if they do MS has PAID to be first.. As in PAID for a "no, but if we ever do you get it first" thing.. Probebly all made up and posted, but I do know a couple sites ran a rumour story on it about a year, maybe 2 ago. I have heard Bliz's next big thing (new MMORPG) is attempting to be PC and CONSOLE deal. I think bliz just steals good ideas and makes um better, but I do know they are not stupid. PC's are minority, consoles are the next thing, they know it, and if they are not getting ready to tackle it they would be silly (and as I say, I dont htink they are silly).

One thing, PC's in other countries, I know in the USA the consolse are the gaming machines, but other countries? not sure. WoW subsribers are only like 3-4 mill in the US the other 7-8 mill are in other countries (when WoW China was shut down they say there was 5 million less subscribers) of course in those countries (some of them) they dont pay monthly they pay hourly, just a different subscriber system. Err point being.. I would think Bliz is looking at some type of console MMORPG, but when, no idea, not OnLive though..

I do Know DC ONLINE is on the PS3, and I believe you can get into Beta on it right now for free if you have one.

the old mainframe thing re-invented in console form

Interesting concept. It all depends on the quality of the internet connection and the serverload that is possible with people using this device. I imagine for each console the company has a virtual PC kinda application running on a shared system that is streaming/outputting the content of the screen and the sound to your own system.

It's basically the old mainframe thing re-invented in console form. :)
Looking forward to see some footage of gameplay and a more in depth review!

Raises hand- ME TOO! I am not sure, I keep getting offers (ok only 2) from them in mail Im tempted, but earlier when i tried Beta they said I wasnt in a location they supported. Just got one yesterday for 2 free games and half off the console and a month free.. $50 is pretty hard to pass up..even for a month just to see.

Heck, you could turn around and sell it for more than the $50 probably. I wish I got that offer. I guess it paid for you to be in the beta. I obviously did their standard public deal of the $99 console and one free game. I still haven't decided on my free game yet. I'm wavering mostly between Mafia II and Assassin's Creed II.

I can capture direct video from my laptop using Camtasia, but not from the OnLive Console since I can only capture up to component, not HDMI. I'm not sure how helpful pointing the video camera at my TV would be, but I can probably try that too.
