Matt Chat 91: Game Over at Interplay with Brian Fargo

Matt Barton's picture

In this last segment of my interview with Brian Fargo, we talk about the end of Interplay (at least the end of the Interplay that dared to take the big risks). We also discuss Brian's new game, Hunted: The Demon's Forge. Enjoy! Download audio here.

matt,

you might consider doing a interview w/ the current ceo of interplay. It would be interesting as what brian fargo is saying about development for the ipod etc etc is what interplay is trying to do.

just an idea.

Great show!

How you keep doing it, I don't know, but it's excellent show after excellent show.

It was very interesting hearing the business side of the gaming industry. The general viewpoint most people seem to have is "the marketing shirts are calling the shots, innovation be damned." But Mr. Fargo makes it clear that the videogame business is a BUSINESS, and it's a tightrope walk to produce a great game that manages to make money, while still offering something new. Interplay DID make great, innovative games, that much is clear.

I agree, but i think this is where so much is failing. To many people think all business are the same, there is where the problem lays. Somebody (not saying who or waht company) who was succesfull running a pop company, a detergent company, a Ice cream company, a cake company.. and now he runs a big VIDEO GAME COMPANY? Smart bisness sense is good in any company reguardless of what they sell, but haveing some grasp of your product is something nobody seems to care about. I wont talk about what the heads of some game companies have said about us end users... we seem to be mindless and stupid by the comments they make (and maybe we are, we buy the same damn game with a differnt gun over and over and over...) NOT a one of them would take a chance on Minecraft, meat Boy, etc..

Really look at the BIG new games... ones that are not just a remake of COD, etc.. not a one was made by any BIG game company...

The big boys are in control much like MS is with OS's... we have no other options, ONE FRIGGIN NFL football game.. its so sad. Im not so sure we like the prodcut, its just all we have to pick from.. Maybe one reason I like STEAM, so many options. I love my FPS as much as the next sheep. And there are some good non big name ones.. but they get no love.. anybody playing is in the 4-5 big names ones.. As I say I like um all. but the last COD.. you could play the game without shooting.. wth? I love the game world realtime cut scenes.. but there is to much moviei in my game nowdays.

hehe Im just anti everything I think :)
