In the fourth and final installment of my interview with Dave Marsh, we talk about a variety of topics including his later FMV games (including MTV's Club Dead), AOL-era MMOs (Starship Troopers Online, Aliens Online), and finally, his thoughts on getting a good job in the industry.

Great video as always Matt, and it's great to hear about the book being ready. I had question on that, it appears the pre-order is only for a paperback copy. Are there any plans to make a hardcover version? I know they're pricier, but I do love hardcover books. Also, any status updates on Gameplay? You last mentioned it several months ago in one of your podcasts, but there haven't been any lately (Guessing you're just too busy to make any). Is that nearing completion? Can't wait for the book, and I hope the movie is soon to follow!

I'll field this one... Unfortunately, with the production company changing hands/management it is unlikely we'll see the completion of the film any time soon. Consider it on indefinite hold, sadly.
Don't fear though, we have several related book projects in the work, so there'll be plenty of new material released, just not likely the movie...
It is tough trying to do podcasts and Matt Chats, since after doing either I'm effectively creatively drained for at least a few days afterward. Plus, there's now the guilt factor of working on something "extra" when I should be prepping for classes and writing the new book before the deadline. Argh!
I REALLY need a Tardis. I don't even need the time travel part. I'd just like to go in there and have time stop so I could get some stuff done.

i want the tardis for babe that always eventually goes with it... Billie Piper being he preferred one.. but i am not to picky.. Nobel things? eh.. color me twisted :)
Hey Matt, you never did mention whether or not there will be a hardcover version of the book. I've got a pre-order in for paperback, but if there's going to be a hardcover it would be great to know because I'd prefer that.
Regarding the movie, sorry to hear there are still so many issues. Hopefully it does come out at some point. At least there will be other items to fill in the gap!
Also, great to see you got your first choice on the title! When you mentioned them wanting to flip it I was wondering what could possibly make them think that was a good idea. The sub-title always comes second and expounds upon the catchier first part.
I actually bought and played MTV's Club Dead sometime in '94 or '95. I remember thinking this is either going to be terrible or great and actually ended up enjoying it.
However, I got stuck at some point in the game and had no Interwebz at the time (not even AOL, I was on a military base in the UK with no phone in my room) so never finished the game. But I have always remembered it.
I was / am a fan of FMV and think those games can be fun if done right (IE gameplay, not video, is king). Phantasmagoria scared the jeebies out of me. I also really enjoyed Under a Killing Moon, which is probably the best mix of game / video I can think of.
Best,
Shane
I'm not sure what the publisher ultimately wants to do. I'll see if I can find out.
Can't say I wouldn't appreciate you checking into it, but I don't want you putting too much effort into it on my account. You already have a pretty full plate and I can always just monitor Amazon for a hard cover copy. =)
It really is just personal preference anyway. I love that I was able to get Dungeons and Desktops in hard cover, but the fact that Vintage Games is a paperback certainly didn't keep me from picking one up.
This is entirely unrelated, but:

Does this count as adding a rat, Matt?
I actually just got around to playing this and had a blast. One of the best games I've played in ages.
