Okay I hooked up the NeoGeo-X and played on it. In 'console' form it is less disappointing for me. The experience playing the NeoGeo classics is actually fun. The Arcade joystick is precise and works well - although it does feel cheaper and nor as durable as the real deal. Read more below...
The design is very nice and well done although the build-quality and the technical execution lag behind. With SNK giving their official blessing on the product my expectations of it were higher. Not necessarily did I think the build quality was identical to the original hardware but better than it is now. And with that mushy shoulder button - well it having a hardware manufacturing fault - that kinda kills the buzz for me.
Still it may be a good way for a lot of folk not woning AES hardware to hop on board. But for this price the console should hold up and outlast its 90 days warranty. It is a way to get access to lots of great NeoGeo classics legally.
So on the one hand I do think it stinks and on the other hand I actually like the system. It is a mishmash of opinions for me and the jury still is out. I wouldn't buy this again at this price point knowing what I now know and experiencing the build quality. But I probably would at a much lower price point - say 2/3 or half the price it is now. . The amount I mentioned in the video is a bit too low in hind-sight.
I see its cehap on amazon if anybody wants one.. $129 free shipping.. I just htouhgt would mention it as I was interested at $200, but htis price point makes it hard to pass up (unless you just bought an arcade unit with a 168 in 1 cart).
Geez, even with the flaws it's becoming close to worth it at that price. I have AES cartridges stacked up high and a multi-cart for my MVS motherboard, so I don't really need this, but it's certainly tempting...
bestbuy for $129 to as the other deal is gone. I too keep 'almost" buying it..
You'll feel totally numb for a bit and then enjoy it despite its flaws!
well I'm so close its been .. modded.. wont say more.. and more game packs are coming supposedly... I feel like picking 2 up, taking he extra joystick and selling the rest on ebay..

I don't really think this is surprising as the quality of the product and even the legality of the software contained within (the emulation bit) left a lot to be desired. Firmware updates were only distributed on additional game carts so as a paying customer not really satisfied with the 1st incarnation of the firmware you needed to shell out even more money in order to actually obtain an update.
