The Technology Behind Great Coffee Beans

March 13, 2019 Posted by Abigail Massimo Editorial 1 Comment

All the clichés said about how coffee-lovers won’t get out of bed, be able to interact, or carry out a productive day without coffee are repeated for a good reason. Technology is the hero behind our daily morning cup of coffee, and lately, there have been great advances in this area. Since the beginning of time from the first cup of coffee ever invited, the technology behind coffee has been evolving and changing. We will explain further on this subject and all the secrets behind the great strong coffee taste we have today.

Water Matters

It might come as a shock to many but the type of water you use in your coffee contribute to its taste. If your coffee tastes flat or weird even after you have purchased the best bag of coffee beans, it might be the water you are using. Many think that using tap water rather than filtered or bottled ones won’t matter in the taste as it gets boiled anyway, that’s wrong. Using tap water can give your cup a rusty, acidic, and metallic unpleasant taste. Water temperature affects the taste of your coffee as well. Always use cold fresh water and refrain from using water that has been boiled several times as it has lost a lot of its oxygen.

Not only that the type of water you use matters, but the ratio also matters as well. Water roughly takes up 99% of your cup of coffee, but you need to get it right. Adding too much water to a small amount of coffee will not only give you a weak taste, but you won’t get the right amount of caffeine to keep you going. If you don’t quite know the right water-to-coffee ratio, consider using a measuring system in the beginning until you get it right and get used to it.

The Best Coffee Beans

There are around seventy different types of flower plants that produce coffee beans; there are only two types of beans which are Arabica beans and Robusta beans that have invaded the market since forever. The best coffee beans you can find are just a click away. You will find if you search enough the best beans depending on how you like your coffee. You might not know, but the roast doesn’t make that much of a difference when it comes to caffeine ratio; however, the type of coffee beans you buy differs in caffeine, Chlorogenic acids, sugar, and Trigonelline.

Roasting, Grinding, And Brewing

Roasting coffee beans take them from the original green color to the tasty aromatic brown beans we know. Different methods used varies to create the variation of roast strength from light to dark. Studies have proved that dark roasts have less caffeine than lighter ones, however, it doesn’t differ that much.

While roasting might not affect the amount of caffeine, the duration of grinding has a major effect on it. Studies proved that grinding the same portion of coffee for more time would double the amount of caffeine. Grind size should be adapted depending on the type of coffee you wish from espresso, filter brewed, or instant for example. Changing the grind size changes the taste drastically in your cup of coffee.

With the expansion of the technology behind coffee, brewing techniques changed significantly. There are so many techniques and style you can choose from if you are tired of the same old brewing system you have been using for ages. From cowboy coffee, filtered coffee, percolator, or espresso machine and many more. You can start trying new brewing styles until you make the best quality cup.

The Evolution of Coffee Making Machines

Turks have been using the same method since the dawn of time back from 1645 where you coil water and coffee and your choice of sugar together and voila that’s it. Roasting coffee beans over low flames and using wood or big stones to grind them to the invention of pots that were specially designed to brew the freshly ground beans. The biggest invention in history that has revolutionized the coffee industry was the coffee maker. The coffee maker has gone through some stages throughout history; back in the 19th century, coffee makers were just a concept depended on the vacuum principle until the middle of the 20th century where vacuum brewers improved to an automated version that achieved a big success during the first world war. Fast forwarding to pod coffee machines, drip coffee makers, cappuccino and espresso machines, or our favorite; the French press that we have today. Brew and grind coffee makers are the most impressive bean-to-cup inventions so far with their ability to add the taste of freshly ground beans to your morning cup.

Not only does it add to our physical health, but it’s also proven that coffee has its effect on making you happier and smarter. Burning fat and raising metabolism is just a plus.
