How to Fund Your Tech Passions

May 24, 2019 Posted by Abigail Massimo Editorial No Comments

When you’re someone who has a love for tech, you may spend your days and nights indulging your passion. This could be expressed in ways such as playing video games, learning to create new apps or trying to build a tech-related business. Whatever the case may be, there are more than enough areas of tech to keep you engaged for a lifetime. Some hobbies, however, need money to sustain whether it be a habit or a career pursuit. Here are practical ways that you can fund your tech passions whether as a hobby or full-time venture.

Get a Part-Time Job

If you happen to be employed and don’t have disposable income to fund your tech passions, why not think about getting another part time job? This frees up your income and gives you far more to experiment with. In case you need ideas for part time jobs, here are a few below.

Web Designer: For those with coding and design skills, becoming a web designer or developer would be a good job option. It’s a way to work flexibly and you can do it alongside a full-time job or as a freelance role. You’ll need to know basics such as coding and have knowledge of programming languages.

Freelance Writer: Writing is another ideal option to consider seeing as you can also do it at any time that’s convenient for you. You could cover any topics including those that are tech related as long as there is a demand for your niche area. To become a freelance writer, start by building an image online. You can then market yourself and begin hunting for prospects via social networks and freelance platforms.

Start a Blog

Following on from the previous point, starting a blog can bring in money if you’re good at writing. Consider a niche that meets a need and that also isn’t too saturated. If you’re curious about some of the best tech blogs out there, Wired, Fast Company and NY Times Bits are great examples. Study such blogs and see what they’re doing right. You can then begin creating content and engaging your audience.

Sell Services

If you have any non-tech related services you can offer, consider selling them during your spare time. Thanks to the internet, you can offer your services virtually as well as in person.  Below are a few services you could offer. On months that you don’t generate enough income or overspend, perhaps look into getting personal loans until you get your next income.

  • Virtual Assistant: One popular service you could offer is becoming a virtual assistant. So many professionals need people to help them and don’t mind hiring people to work via the internet. You could be doing anything from sending emails to managing their diary.

  • Social Media Manager: Social media managers can make a decent amount and have flexibility too. It’s a great role if you’re social media savvy and can also help you build valuable skills. Look for individuals or small businesses that need a social media professional to help them reach their goals.
