A Shifting Mobile Genre

A Shifting Mobile Genre

June 5, 2020 Posted by Jane Smith Editorial 1 Comment

Mobile gaming is quickly becoming the most accessible form of gaming as it has become the fastest growing gaming market in the world – this is largely due to the barrier of entry being much lower than other platforms as we all have access to our mobile devices, many are now extremely similar in the hardware inside and as such games that can run on one device are typically able to run on another too which has become a difficulty for other platforms where there may be restrictions on what device can play which game meaning you may need to shell out hundreds to get a few different platforms just for access.

For the longest time arcade and puzzle games have been the king of the smartphone genre – these games are easily accessible are require little amounts of time to play, users can open the game with a click of a button, play as little or as much as they’d like without the worry that progress would be lost or hindered and then get back to what they’re doing – recently one genre that has very much been on the rise however can be found in mobile casinos and betting services. Part of this surge has been attributed to the spread of the coronavirus and how lockdown has led to many being stuck at home, but it can also be attributed to more than that.

Perhaps the biggest shift can be seen in a changing demographic and audience within mobile gaming – many would consider young males to be a primary target audience within gaming, however it is now being shown, especially within this market, that an older audience is now being captured as those over the age of 30, and primarily female, now make up for over 60% of players on mobile games – there are a number of features that appeal to this demographic of gamer, particularly the link to social media as increasing social media integration has become a core part to these games. This feature has become a core part of game reviews too showing the importance, this review of Jackpot Charm is detailed in that aspect and does its part in showing how these different features are becoming more desirable.

It’s expected that the growth of mobile gaming will continue on the path it is on and even accelerate as our devices change, it is also expected that more than 1.7 billion people worldwide would be playing games on their mobile devices by 2024 reaching an expected value of $56.6 billion too. It’s likely that we may see some of these predictions change too, the lockdown measures have caused huge surges in traffic for different gaming genres over the past two or three months and may help in accelerating this growth further, especially if many can retain the large number of newer players obtained as the world continues to recover and many of us start to return to our day to day lives.
