Meh, maybe all the buzz is over on facebook & twitter, but there’s certainly no excitement here. Kudos for being able to count to 150, but otherwise – crickets. Henceforth, I’ll just refer to this product as the Taito Gamer, since the “Legends” moniker is undeserved with the complete dearth of anything from Atari, Namco, Williams, Nintendo, or Sega. I wasn’t expecting all of them to be represented, but the absence of Pong, Super Breakout, Asteroids, Super Bug, Missile Command, Omega Race, Centipede/Millipede, Tempest & Tron – all of which were included with the ALU – leaves me yawning. Space Invaders, Tetris, Bubble Bobble, Qix & Burger Time certainly qualify as classics, and the Disney & Star Wars titles will get some interest in my household as will a pinball game just for the novelty. Further, I realize that games can be added, but not as easily as with the Blast/Boom functionality of the ALU, correct? I could just stay tethered 5′ from the screen with my old plug-n-play collection, but will probably go ahead and make the plunge. Would it be too much for me to ask for a revised list that clarifies which games are the Arcade version versus a Console version as is provided for the ALU?

OK, a few things. First off, no one but Nintendo is getting Nintendo games. It’s just not going to happen. Since just after the CD-i days, they’ve been VERY protective of their IP when it comes to anyone else doing anything with their games. They’ll license their IP all day for merchandise, of course, but that’s far different from including any of their games in products put out by someone else.

There are roughly 100 arcade games and the rest are console on the Gamer. All of the Taito stuff is arcade. There are also big arcade games from Data East like BurgerTime. See, the thing is, you’ll rarely satisfy ANYONE completely with a game list, be it 3 games or 350 games, or anything in-between. There are just so many games available to license out there and some are exclusive to some companies at the exclusion of others, and everyone has their personal favorites. There are also licensing exclusions tied to certain form factors, like certain games can only appear on full-size units, while certain other games can only appear on micro-consoles. That’s just the way it is in the complex world of licensing.

The good news is is that the Gamer/Gamer Pro supports every feature of the Legends Ultimate to play/add more games, save for APL, which is the feature that lets you interface with AtGames consoles. That can’t work with the Gamer setup because of the way it’s structured. In any case, that leaves every other BYOG feature on the table, as well as ArcadeNet. You literally have access to unlimited games via both services, most of which are usable for free. So really, despite the fact that we already give you (at least) dozens more games than anyone else with our products, we also give you access to as many more as you’d like to play via BYOG and ArcadeNet. That’s why the built-in games, which again you can never please everyone with, shouldn’t be dealbreakers for anyone.

Isaac: I grew up in the golden age of arcade gaming and also would have loved my own home arcade cabinet or the wireless setup of the Gamer because no such product was commercially available 40 years ago. My complaint was merely due to the perfectly reasonable comparison of the 2020 ALG to the 2019 ALU. The “loss” of the many great Atari titles was a big disappointment to me.

A few more questions to help finalize my decision:
Have any independent evaluators (e.g., CoolToy, PDubs, Glen P, etc.) taken the Gamer for a test run and produced a video or written a review that I might consult?
When & where (Wal-Mart, Sam’s & Game-Stop?) might the Gamer be available from a 3rd-party retailer if I hold off on for now on my pre-order? Any idea on their pricing?
In layman’s terms, could you give us more on the interoperability – game-sharing or otherwise – of the Gamer with the Legends Ultimate Arcade and/or the forthcoming Legends Pinball?
Does the Gamer have an accelerometer, and do the pinball buttons have tactile/haptic feedback?
What is the return policy, and when does the warranty start – ship date, receipt date, box opening date, or activation date? (I’m considering making the purchase but keeping it boxed until I read others’ opinions and reviews.)

    Thanks.

No reviews or previews yet. It is the same quality, functionality, and UI type as the Legends Ultimate as a point of reference.

It will be available at the usual retailers and the AtGames E-Store. The pricing is the same as previously listed. $199.99 for the Gamer and $249.99 for the Gamer Pro. You’re just missing out on the bonuses and upgrade from the Gamer to the Gamer Pro for no cost if you decide to wait.

I’m not sure what you mean about game sharing, but the Legends Ultimate, Gamer, and Legends Pinball are all within the same shared ecosystem, so they all have similar BYOG, ArcadeNet, and other features. You know how one works you know how they all work (the Pinball will be a little different in that it’s a vertical main screen and also has the second LCD backboard). You use the same ArcadeNet account across products.

The Gamer does not have an accelerometer or feedback. It has a built-in rechargeable battery, otherwise, it’s a wireless/USB controller. The upcoming Legends Pinball is the one with the accelerometers and feedback.

The 30-day defective warranty begins upon receipt of the product.

So, I passed on my Gamer reservation. Then, when the ALU 1.1 was subsequently announced, I was so relieved to have saved the $230 (incl s&h) since the Gamer was only ever a consolation prize for me anyway. After 9+ months of waiting, I still haven’t quite got my hands on the Arcade unit yet; but it’s getting so close now that I can almost taste it. Yesterday, I also passed on my backup plan ALU 1.1 reservation directly from the company that turned around much quicker than I expected in hopes that I’ll be able to snag a Special Edition w/ pinball kit, free shipping, a price tag possibly below the MSRP, and a more liberal return policy (just in case).

There are some mixed messages coming out from AtGames about the 8/31 release date or 9/2 street date, and now they’re almost encouraging retailers to put it out earlier by asking for photo submissions on their FaceBook page. Can you clarify at all so that I don’t have to camp out on a sidewalk for a week? Thanks.

Actually, the messages aren’t really mixed. The street date was September 2, but as sometimes happens, some store managers broke the street date as soon as the inventory hit their stores. Once that happened, we treated it as released. It’s in several Sam’s Club stores on the West Coast already and will be making its way east. By the original street date, it should be available most everywhere else.

Didn’t show up in my local club until October 5 – well beyond the deadline for AtGames’ month-long ALU 1.1 spotting contest at Sam’s.
