DIY Solutions for Inspecting and Repairing Your Roof

December 9, 2021 Posted by Andrei Kuznetsov Editorial No Comments

The roof is a critical part of your home. Therefore, inspecting your roof and identifying problems before they accelerate to significant issues is something every homeowner is required to do to keep their home in good shape. Performing roof inspections regularly will help you discover problems before noticing things like leaks, soft spots, and other issues. Unfortunately, a DIY inspection will not always catch every roof issue. Therefore, sometimes, you need an experienced professional to look at it for you.

Getting Your Roof Inspected

It is always a wise move to at least inspect your roof twice a year in the fall and spring. When you notice some changes on your roof, call for professionals to check it. Unluckily, most roof DIY inspection requires you to look from inside the house and from the ground. Although this can help you identify an issue, the problem you see will have gone too far in most cases.

This means that you will have to spend more since the problem would have gone too far. That is why it is crucial to contact roof inspection and repair companies to do the inspection. They have experienced staff in roof repairing and replacement, gutter repair, among others. They understand how time and money are critical, so they offer the best services.

DIY Interior Inspection

The first place for DIY roof inspection needs to be inside your home. It is easier to identify a roof problem within your attic or crawl space than it can be identified from the outside. Take your flashlight and visit the attic to start your inspection.

Walk Around

Ensure that you take a walk around your house inspecting the roof from the ground for any signs of sagging, damage, and aging. Ensure that you note down the areas that require closer inspection.

Check Out the Roofs Gutter

It is critical to look at the gutters when doing a roof inspection of your house. Your gutters are one of the places that can help you know that your roof has some problems. If the granules start to come off the shingles, these pieces might end up in the rain gutters where they will sit. If you notice some shingle pieces, you will need to do some roof repair.

Look for Damage and Repair

Ensure you look for damaged, missing, cracked, and curling shingles, as this is the main cause of roof damage. If you spend time inspecting your roof, it becomes easy to notice minor issues before they accelerate into significant problems leading to severe damage. Missing shingles leads to direct exposure to inclement weather.

Repair the Roof Deck

Ensure you take some time to inspect your roof by looking at the underside of the roof deck. In most cases, problems will occur here before spreading in other places. Check out for signs that show moisture has been getting in, like mold, spots, mildew, or streaks on the wood.

Then look for any signs that the deck is sagging and signs of wood rot. Dark spots, wood swelling, or a spongy feel are signs of a problem.

Clean Gutters

It is essential to clean your house gutters and roof overhangs once in a while and take care of downspouts. While cleaning, take note of rot signs and open joins as they indicate a major problem.

Repair Attic

Switch off your flashlight and attic lights. Your attic should be very dark unless there are any vents. Therefore, if you notice sunlight filtering through the roof deck, it is a sign that your house requires roof repairs.

Tips To Repair Your Roof as DIY Project

Some roof damages can be minimal to do repairs as a DIY project. You may need to have little skills in repair may be all you need to prevent minor issues from becoming serious problems. However, have a solid, workable plan in place for a DIY roof repair to work.

Assess the Damage First

The first thing to do before you purchase roofing materials or start repairs is to have a realistic assessment of the issue. Ensure you see the actual damage and determine its extent.

Allocate Time and a Budget

Once you know the extent of damage and it is something you can do on your own, allocate time for it. Not having a workable timeframe may make you rush the job resulting in poor quality or not finishing it. It is also essential to have a budget in place. Avoid having an unrealistic budget estimate.

These are some of the DIY roof inspections that will ensure your roof stays in good condition. Remember to hire experienced roofing companies to perform the inspection once in a while.
