Retro sports games worth another spin

Gamers of all ages have enjoyed some memorable sports titles over the years. From the now-defunct FIFA franchise that spanned many of the most famous platforms, from Sega Mega Drive to Sony PlayStation. To the exciting journey of NBA tiles across the generations. The new sports games like FIFA 23 are something special and showcase the extraordinary achievements of the gaming industry over the last two decades. But we still have a soft spot for the classic and know we’re not alone on that one.

Would you ever turn back the clock and be a carefree youngster again? Do you miss those long days spent in front of your TV screen playing Sega? Thankfully, there’s no need to wait for the invention of the time machine, thanks to the relaunch of many of the gaming industry’s best sports titles. You can relive your youth at the touch of a button, instantly transporting you back to the 90s and a simpler time for gaming. No marathon sessions or distraught players when the game comes to an end. Simply dust yourself down and come again. It has to be seen and played to be believed.

If that love for sports has stayed with you into adulthood, you may now be a part-time soccer player or enjoy playing catch with family on summer evenings. Perhaps you prefer the comfort of your home, enjoying the NFL games shown live on TV while landing the latest sportsbook bonus free bet and gambling on the outcome. But you know nothing can compare to being immersed in the competitions you love most, thanks to the magic of gaming. And we’re here to help you achieve that.

You can relive your youth without the need to go back to school and suffer the many challenges of adolescence. This can be done by playing the classic sports games that have lived on in your memory since childhood. Retro titles are becoming increasingly popular with gamers, but how many do you remember? Below, you’ll find a list of our best retro sports games that are still available to play today.

MVP Baseball 2005

The chances are you may not agree with every game included on this list. You may even believe we missed out on the obvious, but there can be no denying MVP Baseball 2005 deserves to be on this list. It holds historical importance to gamers and will forever be a favorite to anyone who played it, either the first time or as a retro game. Baseball gameplay has never been the same since we lost this one. The creators lost their MLB licenses, and gamers were the victims.

NBA Jam

What a game! There’s not much else to say. This is something special and if you haven’t played NBA Jam, sort it out pronto. You are missing a vital piece of history. Ever wondered where the term “Boom Shakalaka” came from? Players of this title know all too well. We know you’ll love the exuberant, over-the-top slam dunks and those swooping rainbow three-pointers. This game just felt right and shows that sometimes it pays to go back.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3

How good was the Tony Hawk franchise back in the day? If you were a gamer using the early forms of PlayStation, Tony Hawk is a name you’ll remember fondly. The skater lending his name to the game changed his career, making Tony Hawk a global sensation. Pro Skater 3 was up there with the best of them. The detail on every stage, including the airport, is remarkable and sets the standard for future titles.

WWF No Mercy

Remember WWF? Millions recall the famous logo from childhood, staying up late to watch Wrestlemania live on television or watching back the old favorites on VHS. Our favorite was always Wrestlemania 9 on tape. But WWF No Mercy was a game ahead of its time. The thing we loved most about this game was the story mode, and we’d jump at the chance to have another pop.

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out

Has there ever been a more ferocious fighter than Iron Mike Tyson? We think not. Has a boxing game ever come close to dethroning Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out? We think not. Even to non-boxing fans, this NES classic ranks in the top 10 sports titles.
