Gaming Beyond Borders: Exploring International Game Design Influences

December 13, 2023 Posted by Jane Smith Editorial No Comments

Gaming has been able to reduce and in some cases, eliminate borders in a variety of different ways, which have all contributed to the pastime’s popularity.

Players are able to play with other gamers in various locations worldwide when they play online, thus allowing them to connect and communicate with individuals that they are unlikely to ever be able to encounter in reality.

Games with online play have become more interactive, with some even featuring aspects from various cultures to make them more appealing and attract players from other environments. The casino industry has been a prevalent user of different game themes and genres within their designs.

It is not uncommon to find games that feature themes from Asia, South America, Europe, or even Oceania when playing on platforms that can be considered to be among Australia’s best online casino sites. Many operators continue to offer various titles that can provide as many cultural experiences as possible, as they can often be more engaging than those that are based on the home culture of a player.

Of course, the use of different backgrounds has also been very educational for players, as they can gain an insight into what other cultures may be like and provide them with the opportunity to broaden their horizons and gain new perspectives in the world that we are living in. After all, the world is so diverse and interconnected nowadays through globalization.

How have certain international cultures and environments influenced game designs?

There have been many examples of games based on aspects that can be found across various international countries that have proven incredibly successful. There are themes that have proven to be very popular with different types of games, too. As mentioned, the online casino industry has been using this technique with many of their titles, with Oriental themes often doing well because of their relation to luck.

Games have been designed to be as engaging as possible, and those that provide something different can often achieve this feat with a little more ease than those that are perhaps based on domestic themes or genres that are experienced every day.

Japan’s influence on game design can not be understated

Some countries have been able to develop a status across the gaming industry as being among the best because of what they have been able to produce, too. Japan is perhaps the prime example, as the Japanese have been able to create various arcade games with characters that have become global phenomena.

Although Japanese themes may not always be too easy to spot, there have been many video games to have been created from the region that have been able to combine aspects. Nintendo releases are perhaps the most evident, as the developer has managed to create a number of stories that feature iconic aspects of the country’s culture and environment.

China has also started to influence game designs across various categories. Its culture can often be deemed based on prosperity, luck, and fortune. This is something that gamers like to enjoy when they play and can often be a feature of gameplay mechanics that are designed. Chinese architecture can also be a huge feature and attraction of a game, as there is a uniqueness that can be experienced with the buildings and landscapes that are used. Many of these are not found elsewhere in the world, thus making game titles more engaging and different.

The Western influence on gaming is also there to be seen

Although Asia has had a significant impact on various gaming spheres in terms of design, it is hard to get away from the fact that the West has also had a huge influence on game design.

Video games are for everyone.

European games can often be easy to spot because of the often-utilised themes and strategies, with certain types of environments and stories often being used in abundance. The West – particularly the USA – likes to use historical events as a basis of their game design, with wars often being a theme of choice. The Americas can also often be spotted and easily identifiable in game design as they can often feature aspects related to their cultures, as well as landmarks that make each place easily recognizable.

Game design benefits from international influences

The importance of international influences on game designs can not be understated. In fact, they are significant in numerous ways, and games are certainly better with them than they are without them. Players are able to learn about certain cultures in an engaging way, which can help them open their minds and appreciate certain perspectives that they may not have understood or have ever known about in the past.

With the gaming industry continuing to evolve and international borders being drastically reduced and even eliminated through technological advancements, it would not be a surprise if we were to see every country to have an influence on game design in the future. Players continue to demand the best experiences, and developers will want to continue to give it to them.
