What is the Playtron Handheld Gaming Built for the Web3 Era?

May 3, 2024 Posted by Jonathan Adams Editorial No Comments

Playtron is a company that has just announced a revolutionary handheld gaming device, known as the SuiPlay0X1. So how is it revolutionary? Let’s say you’ve already got a Nintendo Switch. What makes this one different? Why would you make the switch – see what we did there?!

Well, it’s different because it’s based on Android and it’s the first ever handheld device with Web3 capabilities.

SuiPlay0X1 was invented and designed by Mysten Labs, who were one of the seed investors for Playtron, and it works by cryptographically tying gaming titles to Mysten’s Sui cryptocurrency and blockchain. In this way, you can buy and own games on blockchain, with special crypto-incentives and rewards whenever you play.

Huh? But what’s crypto got to do with gaming? If you’re new to the world of cryptocurrency, then this is a fair question. The thing is, crypto has long been about so much more than just digital currency. Over the years, it has been integrating itself into numerous industries, including gaming.

While the traditional video game industry is still largely sticking to its existing infrastructure and habits, the iGaming industry has been much more keen to implement crypto and blockchain into its products and services. For the last few years, there has been more and more demand for casinos to accept more than just fiat currency, and in response, crypto casino platforms have launched to fill in this new gap in the market. Decentralization also bolsters that sense of fairness in the games themselves – making their mechanics more transparent.

What the SuiPlay0X1 device does is attempt to push a lagging sector forward. Players will be getting a flexible operating system that can cater to the Web3 appetite by playing games across various blockchains. Essentially, it’s a Nintendo Switch, but for the age of Web3.

Introduction

So what is Playtron? Well, they are an innovative OS (operating system) that has been specifically designed and optimised for handheld gaming PCs, such as the SuiPlay0X1. They are a new-ish start-up with a team of developers who have a wealth of experience – having already worked for the likes of Google, Android, and Meta. At the time of writing, they have recently secured $10 million in funding and have big ambitions to challenge the big boys for the next generation of gamers.

Big ambitions

With distributors looking to ship the revolutionary SuiPlay0X1 by the end of 2024, Playtron’s ambition is to challenge their more traditional competitors, becoming a genuine, mainstream option in a market dominated by old-school companies. So how do they plan to challenge the likes of Sony and Windows, who potentially have their own collaborative gaming device coming out?  Pricing is one strategy. On average, they will be charging the likes of Ayaneo around $10 per head, as opposed to the $80 they’re being charged at the moment from competitors. They also boast that their anti-cheat solutions are market-leading. Based on blockchain, the SuiPlay0X1 has a Fedora Silverblue base, which is basically an immutable file system that generates signatures for each file, helping to provide transparency and originality.

What is Web3 gaming?

So when we say it supports Web3 gaming, what do we mean? Well, to keep it as simple as possible, Web3 is the third generation of the internet, run on blockchain and entirely decentralised. Essentially, it means that games and gaming consoles built on Web3 are transparent, player-driven, and far more engaging than ever before. So when we say that the SuiPlay0X1 was built for Web3, essentially it means that the Playtron OS – and all other underlying technologies – are designed and built on the blockchain, making it ideal for Web3 and Web3 gaming.

There is no room for cheaters

In theory, Web3 games are also more secure. With hacking being so prevalent in games on consoles and PCs at the moment, presenting a solution whereby players can enjoy gaming and all of the biggest titles without the frustration of hackers makes for an attractive concept. This should be another area where they will beat their competitors and draw more players into the fray. In 2024, cyberattacks against gamers has continued beyond 167%, and this is an issue that isn’t going away any time soon. Couple this with the popularity of crypto casinos and crypto games in general, and it’s clear there’s a big appetite. At the moment, Playtron is way ahead of any of the other big names when it comes to safety and security, and the more funding they get, the better the games will become.

In Summary

Hopefully this article has given you a brief but thorough insight into the world of Web3 gaming, and also taught you about Playtron and the big ambitions they have for the future. In our opinion, this device is going to revolutionise the gaming industry and bring a whole new perspective to gaming in general. And we can’t wait to give it a go!
