Top online games that draw inspiration from arcade classics

October 16, 2024 Posted by Jane Smith Editorial No Comments

The gaming world has undergone massive evolution, but the charm of arcade classics remains unmatched. Arcade games became popular in the 1980s and 1990s and have left a lasting legacy in the gaming industry, inspiring a wide range of modern titles.

The history of arcade games

Historically, arcade games were made available to customers in arcade rooms – leisure establishments grouping devices such as slot machines, pinball machines, toy grabbers, and billiards – bars, restaurants, shopping centers, and amusement parks. The origin of the name comes from these public places where these games, first mechanical, then electronic, and finally video, were often installed under the arcades of the building, to make the most of the space. Arcade games consisted of a piece of furniture equipped with a coin slot and a coin dispenser for the winnings. The premise was simple: quick-playing levels with rapidly increasing difficulty.

The legacy of classic arcade games

Arcade games laid the foundations of modern game design. Their gameplay mechanics, controls, and level structures remain essential references. Concepts such as power-ups, boss battles, level progression, and dynamic difficulty adjustment were all present in arcade titles before their widespread adoption in contemporary games. The simplicity of graphics hid an impressive depth of gameplay.

Retrogaming has helped preserve innovative concepts that had been forgotten. These ideas are now being reused and adapted to modern standards. It’s exciting to see how some independent games are taking pixel art aesthetics or sounds for their nostalgic side.

The technical limitations of the time pushed developers to be very creative. This ingenuity continues to inspire today’s creators. They seek to reproduce this magic with the modern tools at their disposal.

The nostalgia in modern gaming

Video games of the 80s were pretty simple in terms of gameplay and graphics. The technical limitations of operating systems at the time and the fact that memory was extremely expensive meant that it took a while before users could enjoy the incredibly elaborate graphics of modern games.

Yet despite the massive innovation we see in gaming today, the concept of simplicity has prevailed. While the industry has now expanded to include mobile and tablet games, the same style of simple, linear gameplay is prevalent in the latest versions of Mario Kart, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush Saga, and dominates large parts of the industry.

Modern video games also take inspiration from the classic charm of arcade games. A good example of a modern game that draws heavily from arcade roots is the Dead Ops Arcade, the retro mini-game from Call of Duty Black Ops, where your goal is to get rid of zombies to collect as many bonuses and points as possible. The mini-game was a success and this led to its expansion in later Black Ops games, including Dead Ops Arcade 2: Cyber’s Avenging and Dead Ops Arcade 3: Rise of the Mamaback.

Retro-inspired indie games

Indie game developers are also joining the trend by incorporating retro elements in their games. They get inspired by the gameplay, aesthetics, and nostalgia of classic arcade games while creating new concepts with modern technology and design principles.

Indie games are created with smaller teams and lower budgets so the level of creativity and experimentation is not often found in mainstream video games. Therefore, developers can take risks and explore unique ideas.

Examples of successful indie games with retro inspiration include titles like Celeste, Shovel Knight, and Stardew Valley. These games were praised both by the critics and the players, proving that there is a huge demand for retro-inspired experiences in the modern gaming landscape.

Arcade influence in online casino games

The online casino industry has also embraced the appeal of arcade-style games. For example, BetMGM Casino has introduced arcade-inspired games within its online casino offerings. Players who enjoy retro arcade experiences can now experience that same excitement while placing bets and aiming for real-money rewards in games like After Burner, Pop a Shot, Mines, and Slingo.

These are not the only online casino games that incorporate features from arcade classics; many others have been designed to mimic the progression systems of arcade games to enhance player engagement. One of the most significant ways this is achieved is through interactive bonus rounds. Instead of simply spinning reels and hoping for a match, many modern slots now feature mini-games reminiscent of classic arcade challenges.

You’ll also find many online slot games with an arcade theme. For instance, the Space Invaders slot immerses you in the world of 8-bit aliens with vibrant graphics that bring the joy of retro style and a range of new special features that recreate the best video game sensations. This slot game is inspired by the Japanese video game developed by Taito and released in 1978 on arcade machines. True to the original design of the game, Space Invaders players shoot down alien ships in a bonus round, directly mirroring the gameplay of the original arcade hit.

The influence of arcade games is likely to stay

The continued success of arcade-inspired features in modern games reflects the timeless appeal of arcade classics. The simplicity and excitement of these games have a universal charm that appeals to players across generations.

Nostalgia continues to influence player choices, and developers are actively incorporating retro elements into new titles. By embracing the past, the video game industry is creating a future where generations connect through playful experiences that transcend time. Far from dying out, retro gaming remains a cultural phenomenon that is shaping the future of video gaming.
