The infographic that follows shows how many interchangeable cartridge consoles and handhelds Nintendo has sold from 1983 through late 2025. This includes their biggest flop, the Virtual Boy, at about 770,000 units sold, and their biggest hit to date, the Nintendo Switch, at 153,100 units and counting. If things continue to go well for the big N, they could hit the billion unit mark by 2033, give or take a year or two!

Although these are easy to do yourself, this was already compiled by CSDB.gg, so I figured it would be fun to share anyway:

SNK’s Neo Geo would be the most expensive console at $1,567.45

However, SNK also makes the bottom of the list with its Neo Geo Pocket Color

Despite being one of the biggest gaming companies in the world, Nintendo doesn’t make the top five

A new study has revealed how much you’d have to spend to buy classic consoles if they were released in 2025.

CS2 Experts at CSDB.gg examined the original prices for consoles sold between 1977 and 2000, including the Neo Geo and PlayStation. They analyzed inflation rates to determine their current worth.

In total, there were 27 systems from a variety of brands, with some appearing on the list more than once.

The highest price was SNK’s Neo Geo. When it was released in 1990, it cost gamers $649. In 2025, it would set you back by an eye-watering $1,567.45.

However, you could get a Neo Geo Pocket Color for much less, so inexpensive that it comes in last on the list at 27th. The much smaller console cost just $69.00 at the time of its release in 1999 and would cost $130.74 in 2025.

Other consoles in the top five most expensive in 2025 dollars include 3DO’s 3DO Interactive Multiplayer for $1,526.98, which originally cost $699, Mattel’s Intellivision for $1,145.43 which sold for $299 in 1980, and two Atari consoles: the 1977 Atari 2600 that was then priced at $199 and the $249 5200, released in 1982.

In 2025, the Atari consoles would cost $1,036.59 and $879.93 respectively.

A brand that appears more than once on the list but fails to make it to the top five is gaming giant Nintendo. The Japan-based brand released six consoles between 1985 and 2000, with the most expensive being their original Nintendo Entertainment System.

In today’s money, it would cost $583.80 while the retail price when it was released in 1985 was just $199.

Nintendo’s rival SEGA also appears on the list with multiple releases.

The 1995 SEGA Saturn and 1986 Master System sit in sixth and ninth place, respectively.

SEGA Saturn cost $399 in 1995 but would be a hefty $826.44 today, while the Master System cost $200 but would retail for $300 more in 2025 at $576.03.

Other consoles to make the list include the first two editions of Sony’s PlayStation, with the second installment costing more today than it did when it was released in 2000.

It cost $299 24 years ago, but today, it would retail for $548.10, a $300 increase.

Corey Sims at CSDB.gg said, “It’s no surprise some of these iconic consoles are on the list, such as the PlayStation and SEGA Genesis. However, it is unbelievable how much some of them would cost today based on inflation.

“Given the high costs of consoles like the Neo Geo and 3DO Interactive Multiplayer today, it will be interesting to see how much modern systems like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 might cost in the future.”

If you’re suffering quarantine boredom or just enjoy a fun way to pass the time while at home on a rainy day, board games are a good solution. In addition to being educational and fun, they offer the same kind of open-ended amusement and variety as online casino games. Both are universal ways to spend a few minutes or several hours when you’re forced to stay indoors due to weather, quarantines, or the urge to turn the living room or computer screen into a game room. Here are some of the ways that Scrabble, Risk, Sorry, and Monopoly, and hundreds of other classics can help eradicate lockdown boredom.

Here are some of the most popular Board Games the world over:

They’re Educational

There’s no doubt about it, you can learn a lot by taking part in a trivia contest, puzzle solving pursuit, spelling challenges, or strategy-based game. Some products are specially designed to teach kids how to read, write, spell, add, and subtract. But even older children can absorb essential lessons about more advanced concepts like fair play, compromise, negotiation, reward, justice, and survival. Depending on which box you pull from the shelf, the lessons could range from simple phonics for first-graders to important life lessons for teens. Never underestimate the power of play.

A Fun Way to Interact

It’s great what the whole family or a group of all ages can sit down at a table and laugh it up as they take part in their favorite pastimes like checkers, chess, and Monopoly, a favorite in Europe and Asia, according to a recent study from Betway, and could include features like 50 free spins. Even people who usually don’t spend time together or get along can come together over a roll of the dice or the spin of a wheel. The key component to the entire pursuit is that it’s fun, and fun is the most effective cure for the lethargy and apathy that come from too much time indoors.

The Variety is Endless

For those who miss the casino-like play, you can opt for simulated betting and go for Las Vegas-style fun like Wits & Wagers or Murder in Sin City. For families with small children around the gaming table, try Go Fish, Monkey Around, or Spot It. Of course, the older crowd still loves word play, and that means Scrabble, Cross Word, and similar selections. If variety is your thing, there’s something on the shelf for every member of the family and all age groups. If you want to get physical, opt for act out challenges like board-based charades.

Your Choice to Take Up Minutes or Hours

If you want to take your chances with the rising popularity of tabletop games like Risk, Life, or Chinese checkers, it’s up to the group to decide how much time to spend. Have a whole evening and a few large pizzas at your disposal? Consider a full-scale version of Monopoly or one of the many trivia-based contests. Feel like killing a half-hour before dinner? Try a quick round of three-player checkers or Uno. Risk and Monopoly are two options for adults who can choose long versions from the rule book and spend upwards of four hours on a single round.

In this latest entry in our ongoing series on gambling technology, we take a visual look at the activity’s attraction through its history in America.

It has always been an interesting question: Why do we love gambling? There’s no doubt that people want to gamble. A simple stroll down the corridors of history shows us that gambling has been around for centuries. Apart from the thrill of possibly hitting the big time with a huge win, what is it that draws us to gambling?

One of the attractions of gambling is the escapism that it provides, taking us away from our everyday problems and boring routines. We are also lured by the glamour that seems to accompany gambling — the high society characters with loads of cash who are impeccably dressed. The excitement of risk is also a drawcard, filling us with a sense of anticipation that gives us a natural high. Then there are the classic games, such as Bingo and card games at home, that have created a sense of acceptance of gambling that makes us feel good.

It’s been a fascinating walk from the early days of tribal community where games were played with sticks and dice to the easily accessible online gaming that we find today. From playing on ships to a night out at the casino to gambling on a digital device in bed, the hunger and yearning for excitement and possibility has not seemed to waver over the years. Different states have their own gaming laws that have been developed over the years. Check out the history of American gambling from the 1200s through to the modern day in this infographic.

The technological progress of the human species is amazing. Throughout history, the world’s most brilliant minds have continuously pushed the boundaries of science to develop new and exciting innovations.

Most innovations are painstakingly created through vigorous testing and experimenting, some are predicted by pop culture, and others are simply accidents.

Important innovations such as the pacemaker, x-rays, and even matches were the result of total happenstance. We have the sheer randomness of the universe to thank for these, and other, critical inventions.

We’ve put together a visual that details 12 of the most famous accidental innovations and the unusual stories that led to their discovery.

Accidents happen, and apparently, sometimes they lead to groundbreaking innovations.

Who would have thought something as deeply ingrained in our daily lives as a microwave exists by pure chance? Or that a life-saving device like the pacemaker was created by mistake?

The story of the creation of Scotchgard, in particular, demonstrates how potential innovations could be right around the corner and all we need to unlock them is a different perspective. Had Patsy Sherman’s assistant not spilled the Scotchgard mixture on their shoe, Sherman would not have discovered the dirt-repellent properties of Scotchgard.

Considering how whacky some of these stories are, many of these innovations might not have come to fruition had one or two things gone slightly differently. Thankfully, the creators of these handy inventions were able to turn mishaps into important innovations.

And these happy accidents aren’t limited to the innovations listed above. In fact, a number of our favorite food items were created by accident:

Corn Flakes

Potato chips

Coca-Cola

Popsicles

Ice cream cones

Even children’s toys like the Slinky and Play-Doh were developed by accident. If nothing else, this teaches us that it’s okay to fail and we should embrace making mistakes.

Who knows, our next frustrating gaffe could actually turn into the next big innovation of our time!

While it might not be considered a typical American pastime, gaming is quickly becoming one of the most popular outlets for fun and frivolity in the USA. With millions of us logging into the digital realm every single day, gaming is as much apart of American culture as apple pie and the NFL.

But like all good things, there is a downside to indulging to excess with gaming. In fact, new statistics from online hosting providers WestHost have revealed that some of us are willing to sacrifice real world relationships in order to keep on enjoying our latest gaming experience.

For example:

43.5% of Americans have ignored calls in order to stay in and play video games

15.3% of Americans have pretended to be sick in order to stay in and play video games

5.4% of those aged 16 – 24 have said there had been a death in the family in order to stay in and play video games

38.7% of those aged 16 – 24 have lied to friends in order to stay in and play video games

WestHost have created an infographic detailing more statistics about America’s habits towards gaming. You can take a look at it below…

WHAT APPLE TAUGHT US ABOUT MARKETING

The 10-year-old kid, selling ice cold fresh lemonade on the street corner in your local neighbourhood had it right. He or she may not have not realized it but the simple marketing strategy that they accidentally and innocently came up with works perfectly on the people strolling by on their daily walk.

For starters, a simple sign saying ‘Fresh Ice Cold Lemonade’ grabs your attention because that’s exactly what you’re feeling like on a hot summer’s day. Simple and to the point. No bells and whistles needed.

As your icy cold glass of lemonade is handed over to you, not only is your thirst quenched but the purchase appealed to your emotions and you walk away feeling great inside knowing that you have just made a kid’s day!

Because that beverage far out exceeded even Beyonce’s lemonade you leave the kid dry by the end of the day due to your word of mouth recommendations.

This is unpaid marketing at its very best!

You might not think it but this marketing strategy is used for some of the biggest companies around the world. In particular – we’re talking Apple. A standout company that doesn’t need to sell itself short, there’s a lot we can learn from them.

Another popular strategy from Apple is their ability to create mystery around a product launch. Nobody likes a spoiler but everyone loves a surprise, so keep your goodies to yourself until the day comes to pull the rabbit out the hat. Just as Apple taught us. They leave you hanging until the very last minute so that when they finally unveil a product you can’t wait any longer to get your hands on it!

These are just a couple of marketing lessons that we can learn from Apple, but there are plenty more! Read on for a list of 10 marketing techniques that Apple has used to build one of the most well-known brands in the world!

Although I’ve written about 3D printing extensively here on Armchair Arcade, as well at popular media outlets like TechRadar and Ars Technica, I have not yet focused on its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math(s)) aspects. The editorial content and infographic that follow from Abby Quillen and Quill help address that.

3D printers have revolutionized manufacturing. Companies use them to more efficiently make airplane parts, prosthetic limbs, and orthotics. In several years, it may be common for consumers to print customizable parts and objects at home—a practice that could potentially reduce waste, packaging, and pollution.

3D printing technology could also transform your classroom. Teachers successfully use 3D printing to complement Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education and to integrate technology into non-tech related disciplines, such as history and language arts. Keep reading to learn why you may want to add a 3D printer to your teaching toolbox, and discover a handful of fun 3D–printer projects for elementary students.

From STEM to STEAM

Our educational system has a big task: prepare students to succeed in life. Increasingly, policy makers believe STEM is the best way to do that. STEM integrates engineering and technology into math and science curricula and attempts to replace teacher-led learning with an approach emphasizing discovery, exploratory learning, and problem-solving.

Why STEM? Technology dominates our daily lives and today’s students need to be more scientifically and technologically literate. Many educators hope a greater focus on STEM curricula will help American high school students compete on the Program for International Assessment (PISA), a test that ranks 72 countries in the world in science, reading, and math. In 2015, the U.S. ranked 31st in math and 18th in science out of the 35 industrialized countries who participated.

STEM may also help American students better prepare for the increasingly technological 21st-century workforce. For instance, the biomedical engineering field is projected to grow 62 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Furthermore, educators hope the program will help the next generations become innovators who tackle complex environmental and societal challenges.

Recently, many schools have integrated arts into the STEM curricula to encourage more creative thinking and have rebranded their programs as Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM).

How to Use 3D Printers in the Classroom

3D printers allow users to design and create 3D objects. They’re an amazing tool for STEM and STEAM classrooms because they provide hands-on lessons that integrate technology, engineering, math, art, and other subjects. Moreover, 3D-printing projects encourage creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.

To print a 3D object, students use one of three ways to create a digital file.

If a 3D scanner is available, they scan and replicate something that exists.

They download a template of a pre-designed object.

They use a computer-aided design (CAD) modeling program to design an original object.

Once students produce a digital file, they send it to the printer, just as they would a document. Most 3D printers have a window, which allows students to watch as the printer creates the object, layer by layer, using a plastic filament.

Teaching STEM Subjects with 3D Printers

It’s an incredibly powerful experience for kids to design an object, watch it print, and then hold it in their hands. T.J. Hendrickson, a technology and engineering teacher at a junior high school in Minnesota, writes that the process is deeply meaningful for his students, and it “changes how they see and understand the world.” 3D printing makes students see themselves less as passive consumers of goods and more as creators who can improve the design of objects in the real world.

STEM and STEAM naturally fit with Project Based Learning (PBL), a teaching approach in which students integrate many disciplines (for instance science, art, and math) to tackle a complex classroom project. PBL emphasizes the four Cs: creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. A well-designed 3D-printing project requires all four skills. Students must communicate and collaborate to create an original object together. In the process, they become more comfortable with trial and error and revision.

“Content without purpose is only trivia,” writes teacher Steve Revington, in critique of teacher-led classroom learning. He promotes a learning model called Authentic Learning, which goes beyond project-based learning to engage students in solving real-world problems in their communities.

3D-printer projects can offer students the sort of authentic learning experiences Revington favors. Elementary students at STEM3 Academy in Los Angeles use a 3D printer to design and print useful items. They have created a case for tools, a charging holder for a smartphone, doorstops, and business card holders displaying the school’s logo. In Scott County, Indiana, fifth graders used a 3D printer to create prosthetic hands for children in need.

Teachers note a side effect of providing students with authentic, student-led learning opportunities: Students are more engaged in learning. “I have zero behavior issues. My students are motivated. They want to print,” Hendrickson writes.

“I have never seen technology that intrigues my students the way 3D printers do,” writes Trevor Takayama, a technology teacher at a Massachusetts elementary school.

Getting Started with STEM Education Using 3D Printers

Are you excited to try 3D printing with your students? 3D printers have become more affordable and easier to use, making them viable for schools to attain. One printer can usually be used by multiple classes and departments.

3D printers currently range in price from about $300 to several thousand dollars. If you want a 3D scanner, you’ll need to spend more to purchase a printer that includes a scanner. Alternatively, you can buy a stand-alone scanner. You’ll also need a handful of supplies, which together cost approximately $150, including:

PLA filament in multiple colors

Gallon zipper bags to store filament

3-inch blue painter’s tape to print on

A scraper to remove prints off the printer bed

Isopropyl alcohol spray to clean the tape

Tweezers to remove melted plastic strands

Spring-loaded wire cutters to cut off excess plastic

A wiping cloth

If your school’s technology budget is insufficient, investigate grants and fundraising opportunities, or consider a crowd funding campaign using DonorsChoose.org.

Research printers to decide which one best suits your school’s budget and needs. Look for one that uses polylactic acid (PLA) filament, which is biodegradable, relatively safe, and non-toxic. Check user forums to learn about other teachers’ experiences with different printers. Make sure the company that makes your printer offers good tech support.

Once you’ve received your new printer, you’ll need to set it up and learn to use it. If a picture’s worth a thousand words, a video can be worth a million. Fortunately, many companies provide online video tutorials, and you can find hundreds of how-to videos on YouTube.

Experiment with different CAD modeling programs to discover which one you like best. Check online for free, open-source programs; Tinkercad and BlocksCAD are both user-friendly for elementary-age kids.

Once you familiarize yourself with your printer and software, it’s time to introduce it to your students. You can find a collection of projects and lesson plans for students of all ages at thingiverse.com and in Printrbot’s open-source learning center.

Your town or city may have a community makerspace, where locals can learn to use a 3D printer, scanner, and modeling software. These are great places to meet enthusiasts and experts. Consider inviting local makers into the classroom to teach you and your students about your new printer and lead students through a project. T.J. Hendrickson has invited engineers, who’ve challenged his students to produce 3D products to submit to companies, into his junior high classroom.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your printer and get creative with projects. Remember, 3D printers are all about hands-on learning.

Conclusion

3D printers are new, and it can be daunting to integrate an emerging technology into your classroom. However, a major benefit of authentic learning is the opportunity to learn alongside your students. Together, you’ll get to explore an exciting technology that may soon disrupt how everything from cars to clothes to houses is produced. Your classroom is the laboratory that will shape tomorrow’s curious and skilled innovators.

Diagnoses of concussions are on the rise in contact sports, particularly in football. Although professional football garners much of the attention due to publicity about lawsuits from former players, the concussion issue is generating attention at all levels of play.

To learn more, check out the infographic below created by Ohio University’s Online Masters in Coaching program.

Concussion Diagnoses Increasing Significantly

On the professional level, the number of concussions diagnosed in the National Football League (NFL) during the regular season increased 58% from 2014 to 2015. A recent report in the New York Times, however, indicated that the NFL may have under reported concussions. Data in some of the league’s studies appears to be flawed, with more than 100 concussions omitted from the figures.

What’s more is that 96% of deceased NFL players have tested positive for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), while 79% of all deceased football players from any level have also tested positive. CTE is a progressive degenerative disease that is often found in individuals who have experienced brain trauma, including concussions. It may also be caused by asymptomatic subconcussive hits to the head. The trauma causes progressive degeneration of brain tissue along with a buildup of the abnormal protein called tau. Change can begin months after the end of active athletic involvement and can cause memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and even dementia.

Occurrence of Concussions Among Lower Levels of Football

Professional football players aren’t the only ones diagnosed more frequently with concussions, as high school and college players also have experienced a higher percentage. According to the Injury Surveillance Program of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), high school football players suffered 11.2 concussions for every 10,000 practices and games, leading to more than 10,500 concussions annually. The most common causes of concussions involved hits to the head with another helmet, followed by coming into contact with the playing surface, and contact with a shoulder.

A report from insurance company Blue Cross and Blue Shield, reveals that the number of reported concussions increased 43% in the United States between 2010 and 2015, with concussions increasing a whopping 79% for patients 10 to 19 years old during the same time period. Current thinking is that it is not the number of concussions that have increased but that the incidence of “shaking off” a head injury has decreased. Also, incidents of receiving proper diagnosis and treatment have increased.

Concussions More Prevalent in Males

Autumn is the peak season for youth concussion because that is the time when the most football is played. Concussion diagnoses for teenage males in autumn nearly double those suffered by females of the same age. Concussion diagnoses for all adults aged 20 through 64 increased 26% during the same period, but there was no seasonal difference in this age group.

Another increase reported by Blue Cross and Blue Shield involves the incidence of post-concussion syndrome, which nearly doubled between 2010 and 2015. The syndrome occurred nearly equally in teenage males and females, but was 60% more prevalent in women aged 20 to 64.

Other Sports Where Concussions Are Common

Concussions aren’t only limited to football players. Other sports where the injury is common include ice hockey, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, field hockey, basketball, softball, baseball, cheerleading, volleyball, and gymnastics. In addition, evidence of CTE has been found in pro wrestlers, hockey players, soccer players, and individuals who have participated in professional mixed martial arts competitions.

Community-focused initiatives like Coast2Coast CPR Training Guelph also emphasize the importance of safety and preparedness, helping athletes and families understand how to respond effectively in emergencies connected to sports injuries

Technological Innovations Hope to Prevent Future Concussion

Because of the adverse rise in reported concussions, the NFL has provided funding to create technologies that will help reduce the incidence of head injuries. Entitled the Head Health Challenges, the initiative is a three-stage collaboration among the NFL, General Electric, and Under Armour to advance the development of technology to detect mild traumatic brain injuries and improve brain protection.

The initiative has paid $20 million over five years for technologies under development by the United States Army, the University of Washington, and Viconic Sporting, a company based in Dearborn, MI.

The US Army’s research laboratory has created a material resulting in more stable tethers that attach from the lower bars of the football helmet to the chest. This innovation allows voluntary head movement during play yet minimizes sudden accelerations caused by high-speed collisions where the head may snap back, a movement often associated with concussions.

The University of Washington has developed the Zero1 helmet in conjunction with Viconic. This helmet address not only linear forces caused by direct hits but also angular and rotational acceleration. The shock absorbing structures within the helmet help reduce force created at the point of impact. Unlike helmets currently on the market, it has a soft outer shell that changes its shape on impact, and a column-like inner structure that provides protection.

The third innovation is a special synthetic surface created for placement underneath the helmet to reduce impact. Viconic Sporting already had the technology for this blast-resistant mat, as it had sold the product to military installations. This patented technology, made from highly recoverable thermoplastic, recovers fully to its original shape after impact. The mat absorbs significantly more energy than traditional foam materials.

Each organization will be able to receive up to an additional $1 million if they continue their research and bring their product to market.

Advances in Detecting Concussions

BrainScope Company, Inc., has developed a new technology that detects signs of a concussion in an individual’s brain waves. The Ahead 300 is a hand-held device, recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, that uses proprietary technology based on qualitative electroencephalography (QEEG). The algorithms developed by BrainScope detect sets of abnormalities in the EEG signal associated with brain injuries.

The Ahead 300 provides emergency room physicians with a fast, objective assessment of the likelihood of traumatic brain injury in patients who have mild symptoms when they come in for care. Up to 95% of all patients who come in for care only exhibit mild symptoms. The device also provides digital, streamlined reports to help facilitate accurate diagnoses.

Although doctors caution that such innovations won’t fully prevent concussions, the hope is that they will be greatly reduced. Following is a summary of how increased awareness is making a difference.
