We have to start with VALORANT as this tactical shooter from Riot Games recently won the Esports Game of the Year Award for the third successive time. Few games have enjoyed such immediate success; when launched back in 2020, VALORANT immediately claimed a huge player base and saw loads of esports pros switching from other titles to play this one. 

After deciding to adopt a partnership system in 2023, VALORANT now gives you 4 international top-level leagues to watch: 

• The Americas
• EMEA
• Pacific
• China

Each league features 11 teams for 2024 and there’s more than enough matches to watch. Games are currently live-streamed on Magic Win or other betting sites if you don’t have a Twitch or YouTube account. All the teams try to qualify from their respective international leagues to make Masters events before finally battling it out at Champions in August. 

What makes VALORANT such a good esport to watch? The gameplay is a mixture of slow and methodical meets fast and fluid. Teams have different styles and there are loads of personalities. If you’re a fan of shooter games, CS2 is a must. It’s got a very high skill ceiling and can be challenging to play, but watching the esport is mesmerising. There are some new talents on the scene this year, with young star donk already making a name for himself with a historic performance against FaZe to win IEM Katowice for Team Spirit. 

Rocket League

It’s funny how the best esports have no connection to traditional sports at all – apart from Rocket League. This unique game launched in 2015 and became a roaring success. It combined two things most people love: soccer and cars. You’re pretty much playing a soccer match, only driving cars to hit a huge ball. 

The concept was so cool and it immediately got picked up as a top esport. This is comfortably one of the best esports in terms of skill levels. It’s actually crazy seeing what some of the pros do if you’ve played the game yourself. With all the other games on this list, the skill disparity between pros and regular players isn’t that much. There’s a gap, but it’s nowhere near as wide as the one between pro Rocket League players and the general player base.

Gaimglass claims compatibility with up to 27 inch 16:9 monitors, 34 inch 21:9 monitors, and 49″ 32:9 monitors. I’m testing it on an LG 34 inch 21:9 monitor.

Setup is simple following the instructions at https://gaimglass.com/start. Slide the metal holder up the aim plate until you reach the top, set it on top of the monitor, add the thumb screw, plug in the included microUSB power cable, turn on the power switch, calibrate by lining up the target, and then tighten the thumb screw to keep it in place.

An annoyance of course is that since you have to place the Gaimglass from the top center of the monitor, those of us with a webcam (or something else) there have to move it. On my primary desktop, my webcam is secured in place, so I can’t easily move it, which is why I had to test on one of my secondary systems. The USB power cable is also an annoyance, particularly since this is the type of device that could easily be battery powered.

I fired up the game I’ve put the most hours into all-time, and that’s Fortnite. The crazy thing is is that bright green dot really does help you focus exactly dead center and certainly has the potential to up your hit (and kill) counts. While it’s not something I could see using long-term because it is a bit obtrusive (although outside of the dot it does eventually blend in when playing), as well as a bit annoying to take on and off the monitor when not FPS gaming, it does accomplish what it states.

While not a perfect or even particularly elegant solution, the Gaimglass works and could definitely make a good accessory for an FPS enthusiast. Goodness knows gamers have wasted money on far less useful things.

Effective, no. Remember that knowing is half the battle. You can’t rely on sheer instinct alone. You also need a cerebral approach to things. Snipers – While they are top-notch long-range assassins, they are quite vulnerable at close range.

Shotguns – Utterly devastating up close, but can be inefficient when wielded by passive players.

Assault Rifles – Perhaps the most versatile weapons in all of Fortnite, ARs are deadly both up close and from a distance. On top of that, some even come with scopes, so beware! You’ll need to be on-point and use skill and subterfuge to best foes with a proclivity for ARs.

Submachine Guns – These bad boys can literally rain fire on the unwary player in a eritable snap. But as fast as it may be in unloading shots, they’re rather mediocre in long distance situations. Keep your distance!

Pistols – Confrontations aren’t always limited to long or short distances. For firefights that fall in the “in-between” category, pistols are the obvious weapon of choice. The downside to them is they don’t pack enough punch for up-close battles. Bridge the gap and unleash your fury!

Rocket and Grenade Launchers – Say hello to a Fornite player’s (not-so) little friend! Even forts and buildings can be decimated with these so they obviously have a ton of stopping power. Be that as it may, the clumsy player can bring himself or herself down with it as well.

And then you only have to look at some of the most popular games today, like Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League, Dwarf Fortress, Grand Theft Auto V, Hearthstone, Civilization VI, etc., to see that gameplay still rules even if the visuals are not necessarily best-in-class. And when games like Flight Simulator 2020 do set new visual standards, there’s often considerable depth underneath (or, similarly, enhanced visuals actually enhance the gameplay with things like improved draw distances, more in-game objects, etc.).

So no, I don’t think we’ve ever REALLY had a flash over substance issue in gaming. It’s just one of those tropes that gets repeated, particularly as an argument for when a game’s visuals are subpar or not aesthetically pleasing, that gameplay should rule. And of course, everyone agrees that gameplay should rule and it certainly CAN trump weak visuals, but at the same time, considering what even the most modest technology is able to display these days, subpar visuals or subpar aesthetics are hard to excuse. It’s the classic, “Why not both?”, which is arguably truer today than ever.

Being the Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 2 achievement addict that I am, I was able to complete the various Travis Scott missions, which included bouncing on insane looking inflatable Travis Scott tiki heads, which allowed me to unlock, among other things, an insane-looking hybrid roller coaster/car glider. The final such “mission” was to attend a concert at a specific time, which I did earlier this morning, although admittedly on my iPad while I was doing work-related things on my gaming computer/workstation.

Upon clicking on the astronomical Astro Nomical concert event, you’re transported into a Team Rumble match. I was promptly killed on the concert platform, but, since it’s Team Rumble, I respawned and was able to make my way back to the stage and dance along with all the other players for a while.

As you can see, it was some trippy stuff, and frankly reminded me of various virtual reality (VR) experiences I’ve, well, experienced, and would have been even better if wearing a headset was some type of option. It was neat enough, though, as-is, especially in the context of Fortnite.

Once the concert was over, the Team Rumble match commenced. Again, because I was playing it on an iPad while doing other things, I just grabbed some weapons and hid in a bush until the match was over. Fortunately – with absolutely no help from me other than one assisted kill when I pickaxed and damaged the player who ultimately killed me on the stage – my team got a Victory Royale.

One of my Android devices, a Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e, which is registered as a “samsung SM-T720” on the Google Play store is compatible. I already have Fortnite installed on various PCs, Xbox Ones, PS4s, Switch’s, the iPhone, and the iPad Pro, so it’s nice that there’s another option. Although my preferred play method is still mouse and keyboard, the touch options are surprisingly not that bad, nor is use of the gamepad.

Intergalactic Spacewar Olympics, 1972

The first ever esports tournament took place at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at Stanford University in California. The year was 1972 and a group of gamers assembled around a PDP-10 computer to compete in the inaugural Intergalactic Spacewar Olympics.

Rolling Stone magazine sponsored the event, offering a year’s subscription to the winner, while it sent reporter Stewart Brand to cover it. He produced an epic 9,000-word feature on the events of the day, and he recently said he is not surprised by esports meteoric rise in recent years.

“It may seem extraordinary that you can now fill arenas with people who want to watch videogames,” said Brand. “But it’s a perfectly reasonable outcome of what you could already see in 1972.”

League of Legends Released, 2009

Developers Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill turned the gaming industry on its head when they released League of Legends in 2009. They were frustrated by the speed with which studios abandoned popular titles to work on the next game in their production line. They decided to create a game that could enjoy longevity by nurturing a passionate community of fans.

They set up Riot Games and the firm spent three years creating League of Legends, a multiplayer online battle arena title. It was released on a free-to-play basis in 2009 and it proved to be a roaring success, hitting 100,000 current players within two months of launch.

LoL earns money through in-game microtransactions on cosmetic items that can personalise the gaming experience. It has been a remarkably successful model and it brings in more than $1 billion per year for the studio, which still dedicates all of its attention to LoL.

It has gone on to become the world’s most popular esport, as screaming fans pack into stadiums to watch the leading teams in action, while millions of people stream the action from the comfort of their own homes.

DreamHack Winter 2013

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was released to great fanfare in August 2012 and it quickly established itself as a key title in the first-person shooter genre. Developer Valve teamed up with the organisers of the DreamHack Winter digital festival in Jonkoping, Sweden, the following year to host the first ever CS:GO Major.

It attracted the best 16 teams from around the world, divided them into groups of four and let them battle it out as 145,000 concurrent Twitch viewers watched on. Local team Fnatic vanquished Ninjas in Pyjamas in a gripping final, and the community was able to see just how brilliant the CS:GO competitive scene could become.

High-speed broadband was being rolled out around the world, Twitch was gaining traction and CS:GO hit the market at the perfect time. It went on to become the top FPS title in the esports scene and the Majors are now some of the world’s most popular tournaments.

The International 2014

The International is the most prestigious Dota 2 tournament of the year and it commanded pretty high prize pools in its early years. However, the prize money on offer shot up into the stratosphere when Valve introduced its compendium model.

Players buy a battle pass and Valve funnels a portion of this cash into the prize purse for The International. The compendium was launched in 2013, when the prize money rose to $2.9 million, but it really worked its magic the following year. The International 2014 carried a prize pool of $10.9 million and that did wonders for the perception of the esports industry.

It was no longer a geeky pastime. Now esports offered gamers the opportunity to earn life changing sums by displaying their prowess with a mouse and keypad. The prize money shot up to $18.4 million for The International 2015, $20.8 million in 2016, $24.7 million in 2017 and $25.5 million last year. The prize pool for The International 2019 has already gone past the $30 million mark and that will make it the richest esports tournament ever.

Invictus Rules the World, 2018

A record-breaking 205 million people streamed the Grand Final of the League of Legends World Championship last year. Most of them were in China and they were overjoyed to see their team, Invictus, beat European outfit Fnatic 3-0.

The LoL Worlds is always the most popular esports event of the year, but the massive Chinese audience pushed it to new heights in 2018. It had far more viewers than big sporting events like the Super Bowl, the tennis Grand Slams, the NBA Finals and the golfing majors. It showed just how big esports has become, and how immense its potential is.

Intel Signs $100 million Deal, 2018

A number of blue chip companies are piling into the esports scene, from MasterCard to Coca-Cola, but Intel has been its biggest supporter for a number of years. The Intel Extreme Masters was launched all the way back in 2006 and it remains the longest running tournament in the world of competitive gaming.

In December 2018, Intel signed a $100 million deal to extend its sponsorship of Electronic Sports League to 2021. That is a crucial for the overall professionalism of the esports scene, as the cash is reinvested in infrastructure and prize money.
