For a limited time, you can get $50 off the Commodore 64 Ultimate: Starlight Edition, Founders Edition (only 2,333 left as of this writing!), or BASIC Beige. You should be able to get an additional $10 off with my referral code using this link. There are plenty of accessories available as well.

I personally have the Founders Edition, but they’re all great, and wonderfully replicate the original Commmodore 64 experience in modern FPGA hardware. It’s one of the very best ways to recreate the original, and authentic, C-64 experience for our modern world.

Firmware 1.1.0 is now out as well, which adds several improvements, including the ability to use a USB mouse instead of requiring use of the standard classic serial mouse.
Torin, the CEO of ModRetro, provided an update regarding the company’s intriguing M64 FPGA Nintendo 64-compatible console. They’ll soon be moving into mass production of four colorways.

The main takeaway from the update is new information on the PCBA, boot time, controller latency, and other nifty features like a light pipe to uplight a cartridge to see the label art. If you’re ordering, you can take the colorway survey. What follows is the full message:

Hey it’s Torin, CEO of ModRetro. It’s about time we send out an M64 update, so let’s jump right in. Early production is almost done. Soon we’re moving into mass production, with some of those early production units going out to reviewers to take them for a test drive. With that in mind, we need your help: Please take a look at the attached images of our <s>three</s> four colorways (we’ve officially decided to also offer red at launch!) and take this survey on which one you’ll be ordering. This will help us ensure you get the color you want, as we start shipping in a few months.

A hot pink hidden latch under the cartridge flaps can optionally keep them open all the time. An easy eject mechanism allows you to eject the cartridge without pulling the console off the ground. A special light pipe will uplight the cartridge so you can see your game art in the dark. As you have come to expect from us, we will be continually working at a rapid pace on firmware after the device ships, and will tell you what’s in the pipeline as we go.

I previously posted about the all-new Commodore 64 Ultimate here and here. Daniel Zandelin created a sales track, which, as of this writing, shows an amazing 15,242 units sold so far. Sales have picked up even more now that some reviews are starting to hit. Some units out there are not without their minor issues, but overall, it’s been an undeniable success. And speaking of sales…

Starting January 1, 2026, prices are going up for various reasons out of their control. So, if you want to lock in the best price, due it before then. Remember to use this link to save $10 on any order.

Here are the top stories you need to know about this week.

1. The Wait is Over: Analogue 3D Finally Ships

After a series of delays, the highly anticipated Analogue 3D is finally shipping to customers. This high-end, FPGA-based console is designed to play original Nintendo 64 cartridges in stunning 4K resolution. Analogue has built a reputation for its “reference quality” recreations of classic hardware, and the Analogue 3D is set to be the new gold standard for playing the N64 on modern televisions. Expect to see the first in-depth reviews from lucky owners very soon.

2. Relive the Arcade: G’AIM’E ‘Time Crisis’ Light Gun Released

In a wonderful nod to arcade history, the G’AIM’E Plug and Play Time Crisis Gun has hit store shelves. This new peripheral brings the iconic light-gun experience home in a simple, easy-to-set-up package. Time Crisis was a staple of 1990s arcades, and this new device aims to capture that magic for a new generation, as well as for those of us who spent a fortune in quarters trying to beat the clock.

3. Nintendo Locks Down: Switch 2 Update Reportedly Blocks Third-Party Docks

A new controversy is brewing for early adopters of the Nintendo Switch 2. A recent system update (Version 21.0.0) has reportedly removed the console’s compatibility with most third-party docks and video adapters. It’s believed Nintendo has implemented a new encryption scheme to prevent unauthorized accessories, likely to avoid the “bricking” issues that plagued the original Switch. While this is a clear move to protect the hardware, it’s a significant blow to consumer choice and the many popular third-party accessory makers.

4. Classic Franchises Land on Switch 2

It’s a big week for classic series arriving on Nintendo’s new hardware. Sega is bringing two of its most beloved remakes to the console with the Yakuza Kiwami & Yakuza Kiwami 2 Bundle, giving players a chance to experience the start of Kazuma Kiryu’s story. In other news, the classic GameCube racer Kirby Air Riders is officially making its return, with a new version set to launch on the Switch 2 on November 20.

5. A Pair of PC Classics Get Remastered

Two beloved, and very different, PC games from the 2000s have just been re-released for modern hardware.

Syberia: Remastered: The iconic 2002 point-and-click adventure game has been given a full 3D redesign, an updated interface, and numerous quality-of-life upgrades to make Kate Walker’s classic journey feel new again.

Sacred 2 Remaster: The 2008 open-world action-RPG Sacred 2: Fallen Angel has also received a surprise remaster, bringing its massive, content-rich world of Ancaria to a new audience with updated visuals and mechanics.

As an owner and fan of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum Next from the first run, aka, Issue 1, I’m looking forward to the unveiling of Issue 3, which goes live on Saturday, July 19, 2025. They promise some performance and other improvements from the previous issues. The full promotional message follows:

This is it: the Sinclair ZX Spectrum Next crowdfunding campaign you’ve been waiting for is here, going live this Saturday 19th of July at 8am UK time on Kickstarter.

Click here to set a reminder from Kickstarter as soon as the campaign is live, as we’ve got a batch of 100 Early Bird machines going at a nice discount and they are bound to go fast.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum Next Issue 3

There has never been a better time in retrocomputing, and the ZX Spectrum Next Community is the best one out there. Don’t believe us? We just crossed the 200 exclusive games and apps made just for the Next by legends such as Clive Townsend, Michael Ware and Mike Dailly to name but a few. Who could guess the Next would spawn so many cool games for us to play into the sunset? But here they are!

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum Next Issue 3 is our most powerful Speccy yet, and now includes new fully licensed cores for the Sinclair QL and… The Commodore 64. Yep, you read that right, the Next Issue 3 can run all the software for the Sinclair QL and the C64 straight out of the box. We don’t even know how many thousands of games and apps that amount to, but it’s a lot.

The full campaign page going live soon will feature all the technical details you want about the Next Issue 3, its new capabilities and, of course, surprise stretch goals: expect games, upgrades and goodies galore. In the meantime, here’s a cat getting out of the bag for you…

Because this is our third campaign and the #3 on the Speccy keyboard is Magenta, we’re celebrating with an exclusive translucent magenta case for anyone keen to mod their Sinclair Spectrum Next with some wires and LEDs under the hood – or just want a Next that looks, well, pretty unique!

We hope you join us and support the Sinclair ZX Spectrum Next Issue 3 coming to life, boosting our already vibrant Speccy community even further, and getting your very own machine to explore. We can’t wait to have you on board.

Thanks for your time!

Although I would have liked their presentation to be clearer, for those interested in supporting the Supersega project (I wrote about it previously here and here), they posted the following information, which I translated to English:

In the video, we show you the console board in operation, running several games, and we explain its components. On the website you will find two buttons for those who want to make a pre-reservation. It will cost you 3 Euros, and, if we take it to production, a link will be sent to you in 2024 so that you can make the reservation.

Pre-book it for €3 on the website www.supersega.com.

Cristina Burgués, public relationsships says: “Until Supersega does not have a working prototype they will not release any funding campaign. Currently we have almost all sega’s console games up to Saturn in a working playable state, and a few Dreamcast playing so far so good, but until we finish the prototype we will not considering to release the project”

Alejandro words on that “We had been working on a SS Core from a few years ago. Until now there were been almost no suitable fpga hardware out there but with the Ultrascale+ things changed, and prices seems more reasonable than before, with a minimum of 100 K up to 1M of Logic Cells, now it is possible to do a Dreamcast behavior with the enough speed.”

Please visit the project website www.supersega.com where soon will be released material, docs & interviews

Analogue, makers of the Mega SG, Super Nt, and other FPGA-based consoles, just announced the Analogue Pocket, which takes the FPGA concept to a high-resolution handheld. This is exciting news, because, to somewhat simplify the concept, FPGA’s recreate the exact functionality of original hardware. This allows for compatibility that is the same as original hardware with the added benefits of brand new, modern technology.

The handheld, which comes out in 2020, features an amazing 1600×1400 resolution, and native Nintendo Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridge compatibility. With adapters, it will also work with Sega Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Atari Lynx games! Of course, because it’s an FPGA, it should work with the various flash cartridge options for these platforms as well. Naturally, a dock is also planned, so you can play on your HDTV.

You can check out all the details, including its functionality as a digital audio workstation, on the Analogue website, as well as sign up for notifications. In the meantime, you can check out 888 casino here, for some great games to play.

Jean-François Dupuis of noted vintage game developer CollectorVision has posted on his Facebook account an update on the planned ColecoVision-compatible FPGA project, which, among other features, will have HDMI output, Super Game Module (SGM) game support, and an ability to play most MSX and Sega Master System games via its SD card slot (and, since it’s an FPGA, more system cores may be added in the future). Thanks to Michael Thomasson of Good Deal Games for the initial heads-up on the update to what is tentatively being called the Collectorvision Game System (CGS).

Here’s a summary of the major features:

HDMI video output directly from the system

SGM support

Added SNES controller port, which will allow the use of the Super Famicom NTT DATA game controller, as well as allow those without a ColecoVision controller to play the system with a standard Super NES controller (although the player two port will still need to have a keypad-based controller).

Expansion port that will allow future add-ons (not compatible with the two original expansion modules)

Power and Reset buttons modeled after “the joystick of docked controllers”

(They are still working to see which cores will be available at launch)

Perhaps best of all is that Dupuis is also reporting on AtariAge that they’re planning on a fresh design for a new type of ColecoVision-compatible controller. This is great news for those of us who prefer to not deal with the quirks of original, aging ColecoVision controllers.

Although there are other ColecoVision-related console projects in the works, this one is perhaps the most intriguing since it should be the most flexible. Target price is sub-$200 and it will hopefully see release later this year. I’ll continue to post major updates as they happen.
