The basics, however, remain the same: everyone wants connection, and everybody is looking for communication and trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Has Social Connection Evolved?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the reign of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesagencycouncil\/2019\/02\/21\/how-social-media-is-changing-the-face-of-pr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the past decade, social connection \u2013 by definition \u2013 has significantly changed. Before the internet \u2013 and the various social platforms it brought along \u2013 we used to meet people face to face first, and this is how we created connections and exchanged phone numbers and mailing addresses. Now, however, the game has been altered, as it became common practice to meet people online through mutual interest forums and groups, Facebook pages, dating apps, and the like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Has This Change Affect Us?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his iconic \u201cNew Yorker&#8221; cartoon, cartoonist Peter Steiner coined the timeless quote: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Internet, nobody knows you&#8217;re a dog.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Don\u2019t get me wrong, I am not \u2013 in any way \u2013 promoting paranoia or an unjustified fear of people. But let\u2019s be honest for a minute; if anyone told you, twenty years ago, that you would talk to someone you\u2019ve never actually met online for a few days and then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ph\/lifestyle\/relationships\/how-to-ditch-the-dating-apps-and-meet-someone-in-real-life\/ar-BBTh3Th\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meet them in real life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and become actual friends or even lovers, would that have sounded at all <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to you? Although internet anonymity can be fun, it doesn\u2019t come without any danger, and just because you may be honest to everyone online, it doesn\u2019t mean that everybody else is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Are the Possible Dangers of Online Connections?<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blackmail<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blackmailers and \u201csextortionists\u201d can charm an individual through hours of chatting, creating an illusion of intimacy, leading them to share sensitive personal information or compromising photos with a total stranger. As you may have guessed, threats of sharing information or pictures publicly if not paid, or actually posting them online and demanding money to remove them are only some of the scary aspects of this exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Assault \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual predators use the internet not only to target children and teenagers, but adults as well. They create profiles on dating websites \u2013 many of which don&#8217;t conduct<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatrace.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">background checks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for prior criminal convictions \u2013 or simply take part in major online communities, looking for the perfect victim.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Scams \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scammers and con men are known to frequently have memberships on community and dating websites, taking advantage of honest individuals seeking connection, only to end up asking for loans they never pay back.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Invasions \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some robbers have come up with ways to befriend people online until they find out their day-to-day schedules, vacation plans, and residential addresses, making it easy for them to target an empty home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Can We Be Safe?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no fool-proof ways to shield ourselves from the evils of the world, but there are certainly ways to limit the chances of possible danger.
