Modern ColecoVision Replacement, CollectorVision Phoenix, Now on Kickstarter!

CollectorVision Phoenix, the FPGA-based ColecoVision-compatible console, is now on Kickstarter. FPGA technology allows for a perfect digital recreation of the functionality of an original system, in this case Coleco’s ColecoVision, as well as for various enhancements not possible on the original hardware without heavy modifications. These features and enhancements include:

  • HDMI output
  • F18A Video Enhanced Compatibility Built-in
  • Officially licensed Opcode SGM compatibility Built-in
  • Original-style ColecoVision (DB-9) Controller Ports
  • Original ColecoVision Cartridge Port
  • Original-style SNES/SFC Controller Port (For even more controller compatibility!) (NTT Data compatible)
  • SD card firmware updating [via SD card slot] (also supports ROMs)
  • PS2 Keyboard input
  • The SEX7264 “COURTNEY” Wavetable Sound Generator (WSG) is a new custom sound chip which can produce a rich plurality of sounds with minimal intervention of the CPU

Obviously, this is a very exciting prospect. Unfortunately, because of the expense of the versatile FPGA technology, this is not cheap, but the value is more than there. Also unfortunate is the rather high goal, which will make it difficult to meet because of the relatively large volume of pledges required. On the plus side, there is a $300 early backer option that will get produced even if the Kickstarter fails (although they won’t be able to have a fancy injection-molded case).

Unlike many other attempts at doing this type of thing, the folks at CollectorVision have a track record of success, producing some of the best modern homebrew games for the ColecoVision. They also already have working prototypes. So be sure to visit the Kickstarter for more info and then to hopefully pledge!
