Is It Legal to Watch Netflix Using a VPN?

Netflix is the favorite streaming service of people who are looking to watch their favorite shows or movies at a time that is most convenient for them instead of having to deal with the inconvenience of planning their lives around a television show. This sounds like a great deal, until you realize that there are several things going on with Netflix that makes it difficult to use the service for a variety of reasons that will be touched upon. Naturally there are several different types of solutions that are touched upon for making Netflix work the way you want. One of which is a VPN service, but the issue here is that Netflix is constantly rooting out VPN servers, which leads to the question about whether it is legal or illegal to use a VPN services with Netflix.

There are many reasons that people choose to watch Netflix with VPN, but perhaps the biggest reason is to get around the different bans that make Netflix difficult to use in certain countries. The location is perhaps the biggest reason that people choose using a VPN with Netflix, this solution allows them to get around the restrictive nature of their country and enjoy the best shows available. Using a VPN seems fairly straightforward and logical, after all, if you want to get around any country or locality restrictions on the internet, it only makes sense to use a VPN to access the content you are looking to enjoy.

Understanding Legality Issues

The short answer on whether it is legal to watch Netflix is pretty much a ‘no.’ There are a few reasons for this. The first is that while a place such as the United Arab Emirates may restrict the internet to the point of not allowing Netflix to be accessible within the country. For many people, just to see what is going on in the world requires a VPN. Connecting to a VPN in a country with restrictive internet means that you require a VPN allowing you to connect to the server. Now, while using a VPN may be illegal in countries like the UAE, the truth is that this particular law is hard to enforce, because for most countries, it means arresting pretty much the entire population, so they will pick battles.

The Actual Netflix Connection

The reality of connecting to Netflix via a VPN is pretty simple. If you are in a country that has very restrictive internet where Netflix is something that is banned, a VPN will allow you to access Netflix. This connection process is actually really simple. The first thing you need to do is open up your VPN and connect. Once you are connected, open Netflix. You should see the Netflix menu on the screen and be able to select the different shows you want.

Now, a quick note about what you see. If you select a server in the UK, you will get different content than in the US. So make sure when you select a server, the server you are selecting is one that corresponds with the different country where your preferred options are. There are few things more annoying than getting the VPN going only to have such a simple thing – choosing a server – be bewitching. Check out the servers in the country of your choice, click the connect button, and then fire up Netflix.

Netflix’s Attitude Towards VPNs

The thing about Netflix and the VPN is that Netflix actively works to keep VPNs from being able to get through the site’s shield. As soon as Netflix comes across an IP address that it is able to verify is a VPN IP address, Netflix goes ahead and blocks the IP address from accessing the site. There is more to this as well – you will not know Netflix has blocked the VPN IP address until you go to watch a movie or a television show and get a message that Netflix is unable to connect with your computer. This is, of course, disheartening. But the reality is that the next step is finding a different server to connect with. The reality is you will always be on the run from Netflix’s bans on the VPN, but as for the criminal exposure in this scenario, there is nothing Netflix can do to get you in further trouble with an authority if you are already in trouble for using the VPN itself.

How to Avoid the Netflix VPN Ban

The key to avoiding the Netflix VPN ban is understanding that you have to keep ahead of the game with Netflix. The reality is the site is constantly looking to uncover VPN IP addresses so you need to work on finding IP addresses that are not as crowded as others. If Netflix sees that a lot of people are accessing the site from the same IP address, this is a red flag that the IP address is a VPN. Another way that Netflix understands an IP address is a VPN is by the device count. Most times there are only so many devices that can access Netflix from an account, when this is the case, and there are a few hundred from the same IP address, Netflix knows what they are dealing with and makes sure to ban the IP address. Therefore, it is imperative to stay ahead in the game.

Conclusion

For Netflix to have a possible entry into future countries that it is currently not a part of, the key is making sure that VPNs are not used to access the site. The reason being Netflix wants to show itself to be a positive actor and snuff out the VPNs that are allowing the service to be used by getting around the country. However, just because the company is looking to ensure future marketplaces, you are looking to ensure you are entertained. Therefore, feel free to use a VPN for Netflix, just understand your fun may not last too long.

You’re already paying for Netflix, so I don’t see why not. In fact, If I didn’t have ExpressVPN I’d cancel my Netflix subscription, so in some cases it helps.
