Types of Broadband Connections

October 12, 2019 Posted by Andrei Kuznetsov Editorial 1 Comment

If you are considering broadband for an internet connection and want to get a deal for broadband on its own, you may be startled to find out there is more than one. Knowing what your options are can help you make a more informed decision about which service you take so that your connection to the internet matches your needs and your pocket.

There are different kinds of broadband connections:

ADSL

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line and is the most commonly used broadband connection. It is also called standard broadband and is the most basic. It operates on landline and uses copper wire to deliver the connection and transfer data.

The download speed of ADSL varies from 0.5 Mbps to 24 Mbps while the uploading speed goes to max 1Mbps. Several factors impact the speed of ADSL such as,

  • The length of the telephone line from the telephone exchange
  • The quality of wiring used in the telephone line
  • The condition of the telephone exchange and whether it has been upgraded

Cable Broadband

Cable broadband is gaining significant popularity among internet users. It provides internet connection via fiber optic cable and offers combination deals for landline, TV and broadband. It is a high speed connection as well as being economical.

Wireless Connections

Broadband requires cables to connect internet users with servers but cable networking is not possible in some areas. In these situations, there is the option of a wireless connection. It works in the same way as mobile networks using wireless technology.

The wireless internet devices are portable and offer you roaming facilities. With a changing world, Wi-max or Microwave Access is replacing Wi-Fi as a more convenient option for accessing the internet.

Satellite Broadband

There are some remote areas where neither cable connections are possible nor wireless connections work appropriately. In these areas, the only option is satellite broadband. Satellite broadband is not as fast as cable or wireless connections and there are often fluctuations in the connection but, this technology is always improving.

Mobile Broadband

Mobile broadband is another way of accessing the internet wirelessly. It is gaining significant popularity as everyone is on the go and access to the internet more essential. This broadband connection allows users to connect their portable devices to the internet via 3G and 4G mobile networks. No doubt it’s a great facility when you are traveling and it’s good for temporary use since it is slower and does not always provide steady connection.

Leased Lines

Leased lines are often used by larger organizations and big businesses. These provide point-to-point leased lines connections that ensure a smooth and faster network. There are no interferences in these kinds of connections resulting in faster downloading and uploading speed. It also maximizes the privacy and security of data.

Some of us are lucky enough to be in an area where all the options for a stable internet connection can work. It makes sense to go for the service with the fastest connections speeds. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to take advantage of the latest technology for a fast broadband connection but there is still every chance of finding a service that offers a reasonable connection that will work well for you.
