With console shortages, consumers are now turning to classic gaming systems and online gambling in Tennessee to stay entertained. An online platform which will only allow both residents and non-residents to play within the borders of the state. This shortage in gaming consoles is all thanks to the global chip shortage that continues to stall the supply chain, affecting everything from consumer electronics to cars.
Over six months since Sony officially unveiled the PS5 next-generation consoles, players are still struggling to get a system. However, with the global glut of classic consumer electronics lying around, there’s a possibility that the supply shortage affecting the next generation consoles might spur a retro gaming resurgence.
According to Decluttr CMO Liam Howley, the chip shortage issue is impacting the supply of new consoles like the PS5, so people are choosing to buy older ones to satisfy their gaming needs. Howley further explained that this chip shortage has resulted in a 57% sales increase of refurbished tech across multiple categories. This increase in sales is particularly centered on older gaming consoles.
Earlier in May this year, Xbox One sales increased by 103%, PS3 rose by 38%, PS4 surged 160% and PS4 accessories rose by 32%. That shows it’s the right time for players to get out their old consoles collecting dust on their shelves and start having fun with other gamers. Players who’ve been able to upgrade to the next generation consoles can also embrace the opportunity to get the best returns on their old consoles.
As revealed by Howles, the five best-selling titles in the last year were all for Xbox 360, including games like Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, Howles also explained that the chip shortage isn’t entirely to blame for the increase in demand for consoles, explaining that these systems also grew in demand due to the public health restrictions. Additionally, more people were trading older consoles and games as they had the time to declutter during last year’s lockdown.
Dream Arcade’s “head geek” Mike Ware also noted that these console shortages also had a significant impact on business operations. Ware noted the cross-industry supply interruption affected most electronic components alongside steel, wood, and other components. He also referenced these chip-related bottlenecks in the auto industry, saying the main issue for many companies was the inability to acquire a certain chip.
Remote Work and Gaming
To stay in line with the lockdown regulations, many companies asked their employees to work from home. The switch to working remotely decreased corporate purchases for tradeshows and breakroom arcades, but the reduction was offset by the rise in home arcade game sales, especially the four-player models. The trend in purchases of home arcade games has also continued in 2021, despite employees going back to their offices.
Ware explained that this trend might be supported by the people’s inability to acquire the latest generation consoles, forcing them to turn to multiplayer video arcades in the meantime. That was caused by the chip shortage which caused logistical logjams across the operational pipeline.
Besides manufacturing delays of the new generation consoles, premium pricing and extensive shipping delays were major issues. Fortunately, the home sales of older consoles are counterbalancing the reduction of corporate sales, although the problem is maintaining the stock and the situation might worsen heading to Christmas.
