With the online gaming market expected to host up to 281.3 million users by 2029 on its platforms worldwide, we thought it would be a good time for a refresher on how to play two casino classics.
With many digital and live casino games to choose from online, we’ve decided to give you a brief refresher on Roulette and Blackjack—two game icons within the casino industry, both on and offline.
Roulette
Roulette is a classic casino game that involves a spinning wheel and predicting where a ball will land. A game of chance, its simple rules and variety of betting options make it a popular choice in both land-based and online casinos.
Here’s a brief description of how to play:
Place your bets –
To play, you’ll can place bets on the Roulette table, which features a grid of numbers and various betting options. Bets are split into two main categories – inside and outside bets. Wagers can be placed on individual numbers, groups of numbers, colours (red or black), odd or even numbers, or ranges of numbers (1-18 or 19-36).
Spin the wheel –
Once all bets are placed, the dealer (or croupier) spins the Roulette wheel in one direction and then spins a small ball in the opposite direction around a circular track on the wheel’s edge.
Wait for the outcome –
As the ball loses momentum, it drops into one of the numbered and coloured pockets on the wheel.
Determine the winning number –
The pocket where the ball lands determines the outcome. The dealer announces this and places a marker on the Roulette table where the number and colour can be found.
Payouts –
Players who placed bets that correspond to the winning number or characteristic (like colour or odd/even) receive payouts based on the odds of their bets. Losing bets are collected by the dealer.
Blackjack
Blackjack is a popular card game played in casinos both on and offline.
Here’s a brief description of how to play:
Objective –
The goal of any game of Blackjack is to have a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer’s, without exceeding 21.
Card values –
- Number cards (two through 10) are worth their face value.
- Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 points.
- Aces can be worth one or 11 points, depending on what benefits the hand.
Placing bets –
Players place their bets before any cards are dealt.
Dealing cards –
Each player and the dealer are dealt two cards.
Players’ cards are usually dealt face up, while the dealer has one face up, also known as the upcard, and one face down, also known as the hole card.
Player’s turn –
You then take turns deciding how to play your hand with other players. You could either –
- Hit: Take an additional card.
- Stand: Keep the current hand.
- Double Down: Double the initial bet and take exactly one more card.
- Split: If the first two cards have the same value, split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet.
- Surrender: Forfeit half the bet and end the hand (only available in some versions of the game).
Dealer’s turn –
After all players have finished their turns, the dealer reveals their hole card.
The dealer must hit until their hand value is at least 17.
Determining the outcome –
If a player’s hand exceeds 21, they “bust” and lose their bet.
If the dealer busts, all remaining players win.
If neither busts, the hand values are compared and the higher hand value wins. A tie (push) means the player’s bet is returned.
Now you’ve had a refresher on these casino classics, which will you be trying your chances on?
