What are the most popular gaming niches?

August 20, 2024 Posted by Jane Smith Editorial No Comments

With so many gaming niches, there’s something out there for everyone. Even if you aren’t a self-proclaimed gamer, the range of gaming formats available means everyone can find something they enjoy. And in an industry that’s rapidly growing, there’s scope for even more new and exciting developments. While some games are based on popular media hits, others follow more traditional formats that have performed well for decades.

iGaming

This sector is increasing in popularity, with more and more people choosing to play classic games such as casino-style games online. The shift from in-person to virtual iGaming means you can play them in the comfort of your own home.

Inventive iterations are frequently being developed. For example, poker is expected to become hugely popular in the VR world, with dedicated VR poker rooms that host multi-player tournaments. You don’t have to visit bingo halls anymore either, as you can now play bingo on your phone. Additional in-game features such as chat rooms and quizzes also add to the social element, while unique spin-off games keep things fresh.

First-person shooters

A classic gaming format that has been around since the 1970s, first-person shooters is a gaming niche that has stood the test of time. It allows the player to get into the action through a first-person perspective that uses a 360-degree rotation. It allows you to see this world as if you are the main character.

Usually, the player is placed in combat settings and is armed with virtual equipment. The narrative is often a big part of it, making it a great gaming niche for anyone wanting something more immersive.

MMORPG

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games allow you to play with other gamers across the world, making it a social option that involves a level of teamwork – or competition. Location doesn’t matter in these games, as you’ll all be coming together in the same virtual world.

Playing cards, whether physical or digital, are extraordinarily versatile.

Often, they involve creating virtual personas and require you to complete challenges within a set storyline. An example might include coming together to defend your territory while gathering resources that are key to your survival. Playing these games means you could be transported to a desert, a medieval world or a jungle in the blink of an eye.

Puzzle

Puzzle games are viewed as an accessible gaming option, often bearing resemblance to puzzles that were frequently tackled in newspapers and puzzle books. Engaging puzzle games have a tendency to go viral, with players across the country and even the world taking part. A classic example is Wordle, a word-related game that went viral at the end of 2021.

People enjoy puzzle games partly for their nostalgic feel but also because they encourage us to slow down and challenge ourselves. Most require logic and problem-solving skills.
