Gaming With and Without a VPN: Pros and Cons

November 5, 2024 Posted by Andrei Kuznetsov Editorial No Comments

As gamers, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our gaming experience and a VPN (Virtual Private Network) can be a valuable solution to achieve this goal. These online services provide a variety of benefits such as enhancing security and allowing access to gaming content from restricted geographical locations.

Much like any other gaming accessory, there are several fast and safe VPN options in 2024 available in the market today. A VPN is like stealth mode in gaming. It masks your IP address, encrypts your internet traffic, and essentially shields your online activities, according to Aleksandar Stevanovic from Techopedia.

Using a VPN also comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The decision to use a VPN could significantly influence your overall gaming experience in several different ways.

The Pros of Gaming With a VPN

Using a VPN while gaming online does have several benefits, including:

Improved Privacy and Security

Using a VPN for gaming offers several benefits in enhancing security measures for players involved in online gameplay sessions. The use of a VPN conceals your true IP address effectively, making it so much harder for potential hacking attempts by potential malicious parties. With this added layer of protection in place,  it serves as a deterrent against DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service ) attacks, which basically flood your network and disrupt your gaming experience. For competitive gamers, using a VPN can be instrumental in preventing these cyber threats.

Unlocking Geo-Restricted Content

Using a VPN allows you to change your location to access games or content that may be restricted to particular areas, Some games may only be available in select countries due to limited releases or early access. This flexibility can be advantageous for trying out games or servers with exclusive content that may not be available locally.

Bypassing Bandwidth Throttling

Some internet service providers (ISPs) throttle your bandwidth if they detect high data usage, which can affect gaming quality. With a VPN, your traffic is encrypted, making it harder for ISPs to identify specific activities like gaming. This setup can sometimes help avoid throttling, ensuring stable speeds during gaming sessions.

Lower Ping on Overseas Servers

For players who want to access international servers, a VPN can occasionally improve connection quality by connecting you through a server located closer to the game server’s region. This setup can reduce the number of network “hops” your data has to make, potentially lowering ping on specific overseas servers.

The Cons of Gaming With a VPN

Increased Latency and Ping

The most common downside of gaming with a VPN is increased latency. VPNs reroute internet traffic through an extra server, which can add milliseconds to your connection. In fast-paced games like shooters or real-time strategy games, even slight increases in ping can affect gameplay. While some premium VPNs offer high-speed servers for gaming, extra latency is often unavoidable.

Slower Speeds

VPNs encrypt and reroute traffic, which can lead to slower download speeds. This speed reduction may be noticeable during large downloads, such as game updates. For players on slower connections, the VPN’s added steps might cause a significant speed drop, affecting downloads or online gameplay.

Limited Access to Local Servers

With a VPN, your virtual location is changed, which can restrict access to certain local game servers or impact matchmaking. Some games or platforms may only allow players from specific regions, and using a VPN could limit these connections. In some cases, you may be blocked from joining preferred servers due to your VPN’s IP address.

Compatibility Issues with Games and Platforms

Not all games or platforms support VPN usage, and some may actively block VPN connections to prevent region-based pricing or policy evasion. Additionally, some anti-cheat systems could flag a VPN as suspicious, potentially leading to temporary restrictions or even bans. Before using a VPN, it’s best to check the game’s policy on VPNs.

The Benefits of Gaming Without a VPN

Lower Latency and Faster Speeds

Gaming without a VPN often means a faster and more direct connection to the game server, resulting in lower latency and more stable speeds. Without VPN rerouting, there’s less chance of lag, which can be crucial for action-heavy games where milliseconds count. For those focused on maintaining low ping, gaming without a VPN is usually preferable.

Direct Access to Local Servers

Without a VPN, your IP address reflects your actual location, which allows you to connect directly to local servers and easily find nearby players. Matchmaking systems that rely on location data can work more accurately, giving you access to games with better connection quality and lower ping.

No Compatibility Issues

By gaming without a VPN, you avoid potential compatibility issues with certain games or platforms that may restrict VPN use. Some gaming platforms block VPNs or impose limitations, so playing without one ensures that you won’t run into these obstacles. You also avoid being flagged by anti-cheat systems, which can sometimes happen with VPNs.

Faster Download Speeds

Without a VPN rerouting your data, you can use your full internet speed for downloading updates, patches, or new games. For players on slower connections, this can be a noticeable advantage, especially for large downloads that require maximum available bandwidth.

The Disadvantages of Gaming Without a VPN

Vulnerability to DDoS Attacks and Tracking

Gaming without a VPN exposes your real IP address, making it easier for malicious players to launch DDoS attacks or track your location. For players involved in competitive or public matches, this risk can be significant, as DDoS attacks can cause disconnections or major lag issues. A VPN, by contrast, helps hide your IP, protecting you from such attacks.

Limited Access to Geo-Restricted Games and Content

Without a VPN, you’re restricted to the servers and content available in your actual region. If a game is unavailable in your country or restricted to specific locations, you won’t be able to access it. This limitation can also apply to exclusive in-game events, updates, or content that’s released only in certain regions, which limits your access.

ISP Throttling

Some ISPs may slow down your connection if they detect high data usage, particularly for gaming. Without a VPN, your activities are visible to your ISP, making you more vulnerable to these throttling practices. This can result in inconsistent gaming performance, especially if your ISP applies throttling during peak hours or high-data activities.

The Bottom Line

While using a VPN can improve privacy, allow access to restricted content, and sometimes prevent ISP throttling, it also has downsides, such as increased latency and potential compatibility issues. On the other hand, gaming without a VPN offers lower ping, faster speeds, and direct server access but lacks the added protection against DDoS attacks and privacy risks. Choosing to use a VPN for gaming depends on your priorities, whether they’re focused on privacy and security or speed and simplicity. For players looking to stay secure or access geo-restricted content, a VPN is a worthwhile option. However, for those focused on speed and a direct connection, gaming without a VPN may be the better choice.
