Limited Run Games (LRG) will soon be releasing DOOM on a physical Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) cartridge with new features, alongside a new SNES-compatible rumble tech controller. The project has been spearheaded by Randal Linden, the programmer who first worked on Doom for the SNES back in the 1990s.

This new version expands upon the original with a host of new features, including new graphical tricks made possible by a new “Super FX 3” chip. There are also levels that were missing from the original release, so now there’s finally a full Doom experience on the SNES.

Pre-orders are now open. The purchase window will close on 8th August. What follows is the full press release.

Limited Run Games Achieves the Impossible: Announcing Pre-Orders for Standard and Collector Editions of DOOM() on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System!

It’s Back to the 90’s With a Physical SNES Compatible Cartridge That Re-Writes the Rules: Launching Alongside the All-New SNES Compatible Rumble Tech Controller!

Apex, North Carolina – July 8, 2025 – Limited Run Games, a premium publisher of physical and digital games, announced today the opening of pre-orders for the long-awaited DOOM, arriving on physical cartridge for use with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System!

To celebrate this remarkable release, Limited Run Games are also pleased to announce the opening of pre-orders for the SNES compatible Rumble Tech Controller, bringing vibration technology to SNES games for the very first time!

In a move that only Limited Run Games could have the audacity to pull off, the impossible became real, partnering with Bethesda Softworks to introduce a remarkable special edition of the classic game, some 30 years after the original DOOM first debuted for the SNES.

Headed up by legendary programming wizard Randal Linden, who first worked on DOOM for the SNES in 1995, this enhanced version is no mere re-release of the original. Determined to do justice to the iconic shooter which birthed the modern FPS, this new version expands upon the original with a host of new features, ‘impossible’ graphical tricks and engineering dark magic that will leave 16-bit gamers breathless with excitement!

Created utilizing an all-new, custom-made board, designed specifically for this project, Limited Run Games’ version of DOOM for the Super Nintendo, greatly enhances performance which SNES enthusiasts will scarcely believe possible. Limited Run Games have fully restored the entire DOOM experience, featuring all four episodes of DOOM including ‘Thy Flesh Consumed,’ which was originally introduced in 1995 as part of the updated PC release ‘The Ultimate DOOM’. There’s much more than that though, also included are levels that were missing from the original release due to technical limitations, with five new levels implemented including E1M6, E2M2, E2M5, E2M7 and E3M5, delivering a complete DOOM experience for the humble SNES for the very first time.

Limited Run Games ain’t done yet: In addition to the improved performance and restored levels, DOOM now proudly includes support for circle-strafe, monster re-spawning on Nightmare difficulty, an appearance by the dreaded translucent Spectre monster, full-motion video logos and so much more.

A release this special demands a new controller to take advantage of the enhanced features, and here, Limited Run Games have gone the extra mile. Pre-orders open on 7/11/25 for the SNES compatible Rumble Tech Controller (sold separately), an open-source gamepad which will feel familiar to fans of the original SNES controller but now comes complete with powerful dual vibration support! Naturally, this new version of DOOM includes rumble support, but Limited Run Games are showing love to the community, offering open-source support to developers and modders, allowing third parties to update their games to include rumble support or code new titles utilizing the feature!

Back to the game and players will take note of a new music player which has been included to relive the superb score of the game, high quality title and score-card screens added, and a Level Selection menu alongside a Level Code system, which allow gamers to tackle DOOM in the method of their choosing.

It’s DOOM that shouldn’t be possible, fusing old-school technology with state-of-the-art enhancements to deliver a thrilling new take on the iconic game.

Two versions of DOOM for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System will be available, with both open for pre-order on 7/11/25:

From retro-bit, which has links to preorder:

In 1995, Majyūō was released on the Japanese Super Famicom® by a relatively unknown developer known as Eleven Co. The game itself is a challenging action-platformer but has a horror theme to it, pushing it closer to what would normally pass for a “Mature” rating. It features Abel, a man whose wife and daughter were kidnapped by his former friend, Bayer, who has become a cultist of the Demon King. Bayer seeks to bring the Demon King into the world by sacrificing Abel’s family and, if successful, would spell the end for humankind. Now Majyūō: King of Demons will be released in the West, officially translated into English for the first time!

If you’re looking for a good wireless option for your Super Nintendo (SNES) controller compatible system, 8Bitdo has two separate offerings that form a complete solution. The most important offering is the Retro Receiver for SNES, which plugs into an SNES controller port and wirelessly connects PS4, PS3, Wii Remote, Wii U Pro, and all 8Bitdo controllers, including the 8Bitdo SNES30 GamePad, which I’m also reviewing. As a final bonus, the Retro Receiver for SNES is compatible with Windows and MacOS computers via the X-INPUT protocol.

The other offering, the SNES30 GamePad, is a Bluetooth wireless controller styled like the original SNES gamepad. Besides working with the Retro Receiver, it also functions as a Bluetooth joystick, Bluetooth keyboard, in iCade mode, in Emu-Touch Screen mode, in Wii remote mode, in RetroN 5 mode, and as a wired USB controller, with more functions promised. Those additional functions can be added via firmware updates, which is also possible on the Retro Receiver.

In the attractive packaging for the SNES30 GamePad, you get the controller itself, standard USB cable to charge the built-in 480mAh Li-on battery, SNES 30th Anniversary keychain, and paperwork. The packaging for the Retro Receiver is simpler, coming in blister packaging, and includes the controller port dongle and a standard USB cable for connecting to a computer. The instructions are on the back of the packaging insert.

Although both devices offer a tremendous range of functionality, I primarily bought this for use with the amazing Retro Freak (which I reviewed back in 2015), which does not have a wireless option. To use an SNES (and other) controllers with the Retro Freak, you need the Retro Freak Controller Adapter, which comes with the Premium bundle, or is available for purchase separately.

Here’s how I got both the Retro Receiver and SNES30 GamePad to work on the Retro Freak:

I charged the controller.

I plugged the adapter into the controller adapter on the Retro Freak.

I turned the Retro Freak on.

I pressed the pair buttons on both the adapter and the controller.

I was almost immediately able to move around in the Retro Freak’s menu system.

I selected the standard SNES controller setup in each Retro Freak emulation system’s menu.

I started playing wirelessly like it was a normal SNES controller plugged into the controller port with a wire.

It really is remarkable how seamlessly it all works. While I like the SNES30 GamePad, it’s not quite as nice as the original SNES gamepad. There’s a bit more bounce to the d-pad, for instance. Overall, though, I have no significant complaints, particularly for a third party design. It’s definitely a controller I’ll make regular use of.

These 8Bitdo products offer a solution to the one real problem with the Retro Freak.

The Retro Receiver on the other hand is unequivocally extraordinary. It delivers the holy grail of classic gaming, bringing true wireless capability to legacy hardware (or hardware that uses legacy controller ports) with no perceptible lag and no fuss configuration. It just works, period. That’s why the Retro Receiver for SNES is receiving an Editor’s Choice award for 2016.

The Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad is modeled after the proven, classic Super NES controller design. While a lot of previous controllers have gotten the look of the Super NES controller right, this controller is probably the first that also gets the quality right. While physically, it’s all but indistinguishable from its inspiration, the controls themselves are arguably even a bit more responsive and provide even more audible feedback when a positive press is made.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3496" class="size-full wp-image-3496" src="https://i0.wp.com/armchairarcade.com/perspectives/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/DSC_0722.jpg?resize=1140%2C1223" alt="What you get. Don’t worry, you don’t need the instructions.

As stated, I bought this to take the place of the poor Retro Freak Controller (although, like anything, it does have its fans). While the Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad does that job well, you still have to map the buttons in the Retro Freak setup just like any other standard USB controller. In my testing on my Windows 10 PC desktop, it was also recognized and usable without issue as a standard 2-axis, 8-button gamepad, although the Turbo and Clear buttons were not recognized by default.

Another angle.

I’m happy to say that the reports are true. The Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad is like Nintendo themselves making a new USB version of their Super NES controller. For anyone who has ever used a Super NES controller, you know that’s the highest praise there is.
