While many of the top leagues in Europe stop for a winter break throughout Christmas, including La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, the Premier League offers up a festive feast of action to football fans across the globe.
This year, we witnessed the first Christmas Eve clash in 28 years as Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Chelsea at Molineux, and there were English top-flight games on all but one day between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
It was certainly filled with entertainment, so let’s take a look back at some of the most exciting Premier League games of the festive period.
December 26: Manchester United 3-2 Aston Villa
None of the five Boxing Day fixtures disappointed, with Nottingham Forest stunning Newcastle United 3-1 at St. James’ Park and Luton Town edging out relegation rivals Sheffield United 3-2 at Bramall Lane — two notable results.
However, it was the final game of the day that stole the headlines — as Manchester United came from two goals down to beat high-flying Aston Villa 3-2 at Old Trafford in the evening kick-off.
A quickfire double from John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker appeared to put Villa on course for a momentous victory at the Theatre of Dreams.
But Alejandro Garnacho netted twice in the second half to get Man United back on level terms, and Rasmus Hojlund bagged the winner late on with what was his first Premier League goal in 15 appearances.
Unai Emery’s men are still in the title race and are the favourites for their upcoming clash against the Magpies, according to the Villa vs Newcastle betting market.
December 28: Brighton 4-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur looked like title contenders under Ange Postecoglou earlier this season, but inconsistent form in November has cost them ground on Liverpool — and they are now six points behind the league leaders at the time of writing.
This 4-2 defeat to Brighton saw their four-game winning run brought to an end, and the scoreline perhaps spurred Spurs their blushes as they were 4-0 down to the Seagulls with 15 minutes to spare.
Jack Hinshelwood and a Joao Pedro penalty gave the hosts a two-goal lead at the break before Pervis Estupinan and another Pedro penalty made it four for Brighton in the second half.
Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies got two back for Spurs, but it was too little too late, leaving the north London side licking their wounds.
December 30: Luton Town 2-3 Chelsea
Strugglers Luton Town nearly made a memorable comeback against Chelsea at Kenilworth Road on December 30.
It was a fairly even game in terms of shots and possession, but the Blues were able to take their chances and went 3-0 up thanks to a Cole Palmer double and a stunning strike from Noni Madueke.
With a comfortable lead, Chelsea perhaps took their foot off the gas and late goals from former Blues midfielder Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo would have made Mauricio Pochettino sweat.
The seven minutes of adding time were nail-biting for the travelling Chelsea fans, but the West London side weathered Luton’s storm to secure all three points.
December 30: Aston Villa 3-2 Burnley
Aston Villa were involved in another 3-2 thriller over the festive period, but this time Emery’s men were on the right end of the result, as expected in the epl betting, against bottom-of-the-table Burnley.
Leon Bailey gave the hosts the lead in the 28th minute, but Zeki Amdouni got Vincent Kompany’s men back on level terms just three minutes later.
Moussa Diaby put Villa back in front before half-time, and a red card for the Clarets’ Sander Berge in the 56th minute appeared to give the hosts some room to breathe.
However, Lyle Foster made it 2-2 in the 71st minute and as the clock ticked on, that’s how it looked like it was going to stay — only for Douglas Luiz to convert a last-minute penalty to win it for Villa.
Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Newcastle United on New Year’s Day also deserves a mention, as the game has pretty much everything you could ask for.
