Microsoft and Sony have both designed attractive transportable consoles. The deciding factor often comes down to brand loyalty and compatibility of games.

Microsoft has the Xbox One and Sony has the PlayStation 4. Both of these are constantly changing and both have received a modern look with a slimmer design, many new features and of course great new games. Xbox one has entertainment apps and gamers can enjoy Xbox and Xbox 360 games and the PS4 has consistently bought out exclusive games and a console that is very easy to use. Both of these have a wide and varied range of games and for many gamers the decision when choosing a console is a difficult one.

Games

PS4 and Xbox One feature some of the best games of this generation, such as Monster Hunter: World, Doom, Resident Evil 7, Shovel Knight, Inside and Rocket League for the Xbox One fans. Xbox One also has excellent first party games like Halo 5 and Sunset Overdrive and the very popular shooter game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds can only be played on Xbox One. Most of the sports games are compatible with both consoles but exclusive to PS4 is the Show series. PS4 has come out with games like Uncharted 4, Zero Dawn and many other exclusives. PS4 has more fighting games like Street Fighter V and Revelator 2 while Xbox fans can exclusively enjoy Killer Instinct. 2018 Brings with it new games for both PS4 and Xbox One. Neither console offers easy access to casino no deposit games, but they make up for it in many ways.

Backwards Compatibility

Gamers will not necessarily need the Xbox One to play Microsoft’s popular first party games as many of them can be played on Xbox One and Windows 10 thanks to Play Anywhere. For gamers who have Xbox 360 games it would be a good step up to buy the Xbox One. Over 400 of the Xbox 360 games can be played on the Xbox One and even some of the 2001 Xbox games are compatible. PS4 gamers can also enjoy older games, but at a cost. There are a few PS2 games which can be played on the new PS4, but for around $15 per game. PS4 is compatible with PS3 games by way of PlayStation Now where gamers can stream titles directly from the cloud for a monthly or annual fee.

Microsoft on the other hand using Xbox Game Pass allows gamers access to more than 100 Xbox One and 360 games which can be downloaded for a small fee.

Specifications

Both have slim attractive designs and both are easily transportable. The latest PS4 is a bit smaller but not does not have an input for gaming headsets. The PS4 Pro is a bit bigger while the Xbox One X is slimmer than the Xbox One S. Both consoles come with 500GB of storage space and both can easily connect an external hard drive if more space is needed. The PS4 has the option of putting in a SATA drive. The Xbox One controller pad has textured grips while the DualShock 4 is ergonomically designed with a reactive light bar and touchpad. The PS4 controller will also support a micro USB charger while Xbox One will either require batteries or a charging kit. The PS4 headset supports VR while Xbox One does not.

Both consoles have their good and bad points, but ultimately it does often come down to which brand a gamer is more loyal to, and what experience they are expecting from their consoles.

2017 has been an amazing year for the PS4, with the launch of its VR headset at the tail end of 2016 and some great new games using that technology. Now developers have seen what the PS4 is capable of, there are some fantastic titles coming in the new year, including those on non Gamstop sites. Here are a few of the games we’re most looking forward to playing next year.

Anthem

Wow. A massive, open-world game that your character can fly through? Mission-based third-person adventure with robot/monster hybrids? What can we say about Bioware’s upcoming new release except we can’t wait to play it. It’s one of those games that combines elements from some really great titles from the past (Mass Effect, Fallout, and more) but in a whole new way.

Beyond Good and Evil 2

The original Beyond Good & Evil was released back in 2003 for the PS2. It was a new concept and went on to gain a cult following. It was re-released in HD in 2011 to rave reviews. Still, it’s been long enough since the original release that younger gamers may not have heard of it. With an other-worldly setting and different alien races to explore, this one looks like it will be the ‘something different’ we all hope to stumble across.

Metro Exodus

Another sequel, this one is the follow up to Metro: Last Light. A post-apocalyptic first-person shooter with a few jump scares thrown in for good measure. If you like your light relief a little on the dark side, this could be one for you.

Skull & Bones

Coming from Ubisoft on the back of the highly rated Assassins Creed: Black Flag, you can be sure this one is going to be incredible. Offering multiplayer gaming, Skull & Bones requires cooperation to combat enemies and rule the high seas. Arrrr! Pass the rum and let’s get playing!

Assassin’s Creed: Origins

OK, this one was actually just released, but we couldn’t help but include it since it’s so late in the year. This hotly anticipated prequel to the Assassins Creed series is something a bit different. Although we’ve explored many cities around the world in the series so far, this one takes us back to Ancient Egypt. Clambering pyramids and scaling the walls of Pharaoh’s palace? It’s amazing.

What to do while we wait

Until we get into 2018 and all these fantastic new releases, what are we going to do to scratch that gaming itch? Well, you can always go back in time and appreciate the classics. Grabbing titles like the Atari Flashbacks lets you play those games that never get old all over again.

If that doesn’t appeal, then you can always use the web browser on your PS4 for a change of pace. Logging into a site like Casinomir.com gives you the chance to use your tech to connect and enjoy slots, casino games, and more.

The beauty of a device like the PS4 is its versatility. While we wait for the great titles that are coming in the new year, take full advantage of this.

After recently getting a new TV and surround sound system for proper 4K gaming, I ran into a space issue. With an extra long center sound bar and no easy way to wall mount it, I had less space for my consoles.

As of now, on the top of my furniture unit, I have the center sound bar, cable box, Xbox One S, PlayStation 4 Pro (PS4 Pro), and Nintendo Switch. The Switch in its dock fits neatly behind the sound bar, while the oversized cable box sits in its only available orientation, horizontal. That left me to stack my Xbox One S on top of my PS4 Pro.

Unfortunately, doing this type of stacking seemed to cause the PS4 Pro to overheat; the center top of its case appears to be a heat transfer point. With the Xbox One S on top, there was no way for this heat to naturally dissipate and/or stay under control. The solution was to place both of those consoles in a vertical position.

The Xbox One S stand in action.

The DOUBI Vertical Stand for Xbox One S is a simple stand that clicks into place on the bottom of the console. While indeed simple, it’s effective, and it has a reasonable low price to match.

The PS4 Pro stand in action.

The Younik PS4 Pro Vertical Stand is similarly a simple stand that encloses the bottom of its console. It’s a little bigger than its Xbox One S counterpart, but then the PS4 Pro is slightly larger and has an angled shape that requires a different type of accommodation. Regardless, it too is effective with a reasonable low price to match.

Living side-by-side in harmony.

It’s hard to muster much enthusiasm for products that are so simple, but it would be disingenuous to ignore the fact that they solve a very real problem without breaking the bank. You can pay a lot more for other vertical stands that are frankly over-engineered.

The fact that there’s an older Sony patent – even though we know that patents often don’t lead to anything – for a Switch-like device, has of course added fuel to the fire.

Since both Sony (especially Sony) and Microsoft are doing just fine with their traditional consoles, and Nintendo finally has the hybrid thing all but nailed, there’s only one logical scenario, and it’s not going down the same path Sony recently did with their promising, but slow selling, Vita handheld (no reason to waste time recapping why). Instead, while I think it will indeed be about borrowing the Switch idea from Nintendo, it won’t be at least until we’re a few more years in that it might actually be practical (and affordable).

In short, once both Sony and Microsoft are able to cram the original model PS4 and Xbox One specs and capabilities, i.e., not the Pro, S, or Scorpio, into a Switch-like device, that’s when we may actually see something. That’s of course another plus to their respective strategies of iterating on the same base specification and requiring all future software to be compatible with the very first models of their hardware. It’s absolutely not out of the realm of possibility to have a 720p or 1080p PS4 or Xbox One gaming handheld, that, when docked, plays on a TV just like the original console. Both Sony and Microsoft have already taken miniaturization steps with both the PS4 Slim and Xbox One S, respectively, and, with a drop of the optical drives and reduction of onboard ports, could easily shrink further given the expected advancements in technological innovation.

So no, I don’t expect Sony (or Microsoft) to release any other devices to compete with the Switch. Each platform is succeeding relative to its market, and it makes no business sense to distract from that with something incompatible. Since a compatible PS4 or Xbox One Switch-like device isn’t possible with today’s technology, the only logical conclusion is we’re at best two to three years away. That’s probably around the same time we’ll get a “Switch Pro” from Nintendo, which would follow the same backwards compatible iterative update/upgrade path that Sony and Microsoft are already on with their respective consoles.

Armed with the complete set and some ginger candy for my unfortunate motion sickness sensitivity (can’t read in a car, etc.), I was ready to go. Unfortunately, it really is a lot to set up.

Basically you need to intercept your PS4’s HDMI output with a breakout box that also has a separate power supply for the headset. Once you have the headset plugged into the breakout box, you also need to plug in the included wired headphones (or any headphones). Only then are you set before onscreen calibration.

PlayStation VR Demo Disc

Anyway, as stated, the Launch Bundle comes with PlayStation VR Worlds, as well as a Demo disc, which is supplied with all versions of the headset (if you have PlayStation Network, you can also upgrade to Playroom VR for free; a few other titles can also be upgraded to VR for a nominal fee). The Demo disc hearkens back to the days of the original PlayStation’s demo disc and provides a surprisingly robust sampling of most of the VR title offerings now available, including PlayStation VR Worlds:

Allumette (Penrose)

Battlezone (Rebellion)

DriveClub VR (SIE WWS)

Eve: Valkyrie (CCP Games)

Gnog (KO_OP)

Harmonix Music VR (Harmonix Music Systems)

Headmaster (Frame Interactive)

Here They Lie (SIE WWS)

Job Simulator (Owlchemy Labs)

PlayStation VR Worlds (SIE WWS)

Resident Evil 7 biohazard — Kitchen Teaser (Capcom CO., LTD.)

Rez Infinite (Enhance Games)

Rigs Mechanized Combat League (SIE WWS)

Thumper (Drool)

Tumble VR (SIE WWS)

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood (SIE WWS)

Wayward Sky (Uber Entertainment)

Within (Within)

So far, I was able to sample Battlezone, DriveClub VR, and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. In fact, the very first experience I had was with Battlezone, and it blew me away, immediately converting me to the wonders of VR.

In Battlezone, as you would expect for a game loosely based off the arcade classic, you’re placed inside of a tank. The neat thing is is that you have a 360 degree view. Look behind you, you see the back of your cockpit and seat. Look up, you see the ceiling or sky. Look down, you see the bottom of your cockpit. It’s absolutely immersive.

A scene from Battlezone.

I wasn’t terribly impressed with DriveClub VR. It also made me feel nauseous after only one race. No amount of ginger candy would be able to stop that. While a lot of people are criticizing the visuals, I’d say they’re serviceable enough, but in this type of game you’re virtually tossed about too much, which is rather hard on the old brain when your body is mostly stationary.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a rail shooter with terrible visuals. It’s also absolutely terrifying, causing me to yell with terror a few times. That’s the power of VR. In fact, it’s so scary that my middle daughter and wife bailed even before it really got going. This is best played with two of the PlayStation Move controllers, which act as your two mini shotguns and help further enhance immersion.

PlayStation VR Worlds

This is actually a great title to show off VR. Even the lobby is incredibly immersive, both surrounding you and allowing you to interact with some of the environmental effects. The collection of games and experiences are as follows:

The London Heist

Ocean Descent

Scavengers Odyssey

VR Luge

Danger Ball

I first tried Ocean Descent, which places you in a shark cage and lowers you deep into the ocean in more or less real time. It’s a mostly passive experience, but quite engaging for what it is. I especially liked walking around the shark cage by walking in a small area in my room.

I then tried Danger Ball, which reminds me a lot of the games I used to play on Kinect. In this case, you have to head butt a ball back to the other side to defeat your opponent. While it’s little more than an evolved Pong, it’s still – and here’s that wording again – incredibly immersive. It’s also nice to have an athletic experience as well.

A scene from The London Heist.

Finally, I tried The London Heist, which I think is fair to say makes perhaps the greatest case for VR. You’re placed in a very adult London underworld as a gangster in the thick of a convoluted heist plot. The best part here is that while most of the other VR games scream out for some type of hand or body tracking, this game actually translates holding the two Move controllers into in-game hands. While not perfect, it does work, and soon enough your brain is fooled to the point where it really does feel like your arms in the game, picking items up, loading and point your gun, lighting and smoking a stogie (be sure to use the headset’s microphone!), etc. The 3D depth effect is also really amazing when you’re doing the laser targeting mini-game within the game. The only downside here is that the main story experience is really short, clocking in around maybe 30 minutes or less. Nevertheless, it’s something I’ll be going back to again and again, and would immediately buy a full blown game that’s just like it. This takes the boring out of first person shooters by letting you duck and cover by actually ducking and covering, so this too is a pretty physical experience. I will admit though that I didn’t know if I was supposed to sit or stand for the game, so I mostly stood, which was kind of awkward when sitting in the virtual car.

Conclusion

Both thumbs up. Way up.

The downsides are that there are too many wires and a clumsy breakout box, and the initial setup is convoluted. It’s also a bit hard to fit the headset perfectly, and it’s something my wife and kids have particularly struggled with most of the time.

Once you’re passed that, though, and actually using it (with a good fit), the immersion is extraordinary. You literally feel like you’re in another world, with everything wrapping around you in all ways.

While it’s undeniably immersive (I found myself spontaneously giggling at times in various games at how delightful and transformative the experience was), the actual controls when you’re in the virtual world sometimes leave something to be desired. This just screams out for full body and hand/arm tracking, which it doesn’t have (and no solution has to this point). It can track the controller for the most part, and does a good job of tracking your head, but that’s about it beyond a precious few games supporting Move controllers for rudimentary hand tracking. There’s kind of a disconnect there, i.e., you want to reach out and touch stuff, but you usually can’t, and, even when you can, not necessarily in the most optimal manner. When someone in the future solves the problem of full body tracking (and preferably ties it to some haptic feedback), then we’ll nearly have the equivalent of the vaunted holodeck.

I’ve played a handful of games so far, including the ones mentioned above (and Playroom VR, which is also quite immersive, but I haven’t found much to do with it yet), and I’m anxious to try more. Unfortunately, I can play for roughly 30 – 60 minutes a day before it gets to be too much. It’s telling how amazing the experience is that I’m willing to put up with that level of discomfort (I also hope that my tolerance will build up and my natural motion sickness will lessen over time).

I can see the difficulty of set up scaring some people off, but I think if they get to try it, they’ll be blown away like I was. It really is the type of thing you have to try rather than be told about. I guess that’s why it’s called an “experience.”

Companies Partner to Deliver Iconic Game Collections on Next-Generation Consoles for the First Time with Modern Gaming Capabilities Including Global Leaderboards, Online Multiplayer, and More

NEW YORK, NY AND LOS ANGELES, CA (PRWEB) JUNE 29, 2016

Atari®, one of the world’s most recognized publishers and producers of interactive entertainment, and AtGames® Digital Media Ltd., today announced their latest retro-gaming releases, Atari Flashback® Classics Volume 1 and Atari Flashback® Classics Volume 2. Each volume features 50 different classic Atari 2600 Video Computer System (VCS) and arcade games. The addictively fun bundle of games will launch on next-generation consoles in Holiday 2016.

For the first time on console, players can experience Atari’s greatest hits with the benefit of today’s technology, including full 1080p high-definition, global leaderboards, online multiplayer, and more. Featuring games like Asteroids®, Centipede®, Missile Command®, Tempest®, Warlords®, and many more, each volume of Atari Flashback Classics combines the nostalgia of the Atari 2600 arcades with modern gaming capabilities.

“Each volume of Atari Flashback Classics offers convenient access to some of the most memorable titles in gaming history, introducing a new generation of gamers to many of the very best videogames ever created,” said Fred Chesnais, Chief Executive Officer, Atari. “It is our hope that the same excitement people experienced when these titles were first introduced to the home and in the arcade can be felt again, and that today’s gamers can discover what made these titles legendary.”
