Similar to other industries, the gaming world has experienced several changes over the years. It is more mainstream and more people are turning to the video game industry for fun and excitement. A decade ago, the idea of a video game was attributed to violence and was mostly associated with the use of guns. Nonetheless, more games have been invented since then with new games like Minecraft which involves less violence emerging. Back then, the only games that were popular included Halo and Call of Duty.

The gaming world currently consists of different genres including Fortnite, Super Mario Bros as well as Five Nights at Freddy’s. These games have solidified in the society’s culture and are now household names. On social media, various memes regarding different video games are posted from time to time indicating the popularity of video games.

One may stop and wonder how video games became so popular and ubiquitous with the young generation. When looking at the factors that led to this evolution, social media has played a huge role in overseeing the shift. The gaming industry’s worth has been calculated to have a worth of $99.6 billion.

Social media has participated greatly in shaping it to what it is today.

Going by the research from Statista, last year, the U.S. social gaming industry has a $ 2.15 billion worth. In Asia, its worth is $2.5 billion. Research has also indicated that more than half of the social media community plays various games on the social sites. Additionally, fifteen percent of the time used on Facebook is spent playing various games.

These statistics indicate a trend where social media is propelling the growth of the gaming industry. To create these growing trend, there are many ways through which social media is impacting the gaming industry.

Increased Engagement through Instant Games

The people of today want things that are available instantly. They do not want to wait for things and the provision of gaming platforms on social media sites which allow for instant access to fulfill their needs. The instant availability on Facebook which came after the social media site launched the instant game feature has contributed greatly to the thriving of games. With this feature, Facebook users can play several games without having to necessarily install certain applications.

The Ever Increasing Number of Multiplayer Games

Multiplayer games which are browser-based have been on the increase of late. Their popularity is attributed to io games like Slither.io and Agar.io which became very popular. Social media has driven their popularity higher by enabling users to access multiplayer games directly when browsing on some of their favorite sites.

Following the success of the gaming industry through social media, game developers have gone ahead to advertise their games on different social media sites. All these efforts have been to alert potential gamers about the existence of the games.
