THCA vs. CBD for Pain Relief: What’s Better for Treating Pain?

July 13, 2023 Posted by A.K. Patel Editorial No Comments

Pain is a common problem that affects everyone. It can be caused by different factors, such as injury, illness, and even surgery. THCA and CBD have been shown to have the potential for pain relief. Both are effective, but some debate exists about which is the best. We will explore the differences between THCA and CBD for pain relief and discuss which of the compounds is better for pain relief.

Understanding THCA and CBD.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) are two of the most well-known cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. While they are both similar, they have different properties and effects on the body.

THCA is the acidic precursor to THC. In its raw form, THCA does not have psychoactive effects, but when heated through smoking and other means, it undergoes a process called decarboxylation and converts it into THC.

Like THCA, CBD is also non-psychoactive. It does not convert into any other compound. It also offers similar therapeutic benefits. It is commonly used to alleviate symptoms associated with epilepsy, chronic pain, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

Mechanisms of Pain Relief

The endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors and chemical signals that regulates physiological processes. This includes pain, appetite, sleep, and mood. The two main types of receptors in this system are the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors are primarily found in the central nervous system. In contrast, CB2 receptors are mostly found in the peripheral tissues and immune system. The activation of CB1 receptors in the central nervous system can relieve pain. It can also reduce the sensitivity of pain receptors.

CB2 receptors are involved in regulating immune responses and inflammation. When activated, these receptors can help to control the release of inflammatory molecules, thereby reducing pain and inflammation.

How THCA Relieves Pain

THCA works by activating the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). This activation may help reduce pain perception. It can also inhibit enzyme activity and help reduce inflammation and subsequent pain.

THCA may also interact with other receptors involved in pain modulation, such as the vanilloid receptor TRPV1. Activation of TRPV1 receptors can affect pain perception, and THCA has been found to have potential TRPV1 agonist activity.

How CBD Relieves Pain

CBD does not directly bind to CB1 or CB2 receptors but can influence the endocannabinoid system. It can enhance the effects of endocannabinoids by inhibiting their breakdown, leading to increased pain relief. CBD can also interact with other receptors involved in pain modulation, such as serotonin receptors, further contributing to its analgesic effects.

Which is Better for Pain

The research on THCA and CBD for pain relief is still advancing, so it is hard to say definitively which is better for you. But if you have to choose one, consider some factors before committing to it.

Severity and type of pain

Some pain conditions may be more responsive to THCA, while others may be more responsive to CBD. For some persons, THCA may be more effective for neuropathic pain, while CBD may be more effective for inflammatory pain. Some people find THCA more effective for pain relief, while others prefer CBD. We suggest experimenting with different products and dosages to find what works best.

Legal Considerations and Accessibility.

To be on the right side of the law, It’s essential to check the legal status of THCA and CBD in your location before you purchase any products. In some states, THCA is legal, while CBD is not. In other states, both THCA and CBD are legal.

Lifestyle factors

If you have a busy lifestyle or a job requiring you to be alert, it’s essential to know how CBD or THCA affects you before using it. THCA can make you feel sleepy, so it’s not a good idea to use it if you need to be alert. Depending on your activities, you may also prefer the one that is easy to use.

Side Effects and Safety Considerations.

If you have any underlying health conditions, you should talk to your doctor before using THCA or CBD. THCA or CBD can interact with certain medications. So it’s essential to be sure they’re safe for you. Also, monitor your symptoms and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Keynote

If you’re considering using THCA or CBD for pain relief, the best way to figure out what works best for you is to speak with a doctor. They can help you decide if these cannabinoids are appropriate for your needs.

You could also start with a low dose and gradually increase it while keeping track of how your body responds. And if you’re based in Greater Vancouver, accessing products through a local, trusted service like Same Day Cannabis can be a convenient way to explore your options responsibly.
